In what was a back-and-forth contest, the Mavericks held on for the crucial 108-105 victory in Game 1. Luka Doncic looked like his usual self with 33 points, six rebounds, and eight assists while Kyrie Irving finished with 30 points on 52.2% shooting.

Mavericks vs Timberwolves Game 2 Predictions & NBA Picks Today (5/24)

Despite leading by as many as nine points in Game 1, the Timberwolves couldn't walk away with the victory. They can't dwell on the loss, though, because they must be focused if they want to win Game 2 tonight.

One thing that Minnesota can improve on is its shooting — especially up close. While the Timberwolves shot 36.7% from deep in Game 1, they also finished with an unfavorable 42.7 FG%. The Mavericks were, easily, the better team down low, outscoring the T-wolves 62-38 in the paint while winning the rebounding battle 48-40.

A better success rate at the free-throw line would also help the Timberwolves. After all, they shot 11-for-18 (61.1%) from the charity stripe on Wednesday, meaning a few less misses would've likely led to a victory.

Minnesota will also be looking at Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns for bounce-back performances. While Doncic and Irving combined for 63 points, the Timberwolves duo only put up 35 on .333/.333/1.000 shooting splits.

Anthony Edwards (Karl-Anthony Towns) must be better for the Timberwolves in Game 2. 

It's entirely possible that the Mavericks' victory was a fluke. Wins have been rare for them when they visit Target Center, proven by a 2-6 SU record across their last eight trips to Minneapolis. Dallas' wins during that stretch only came by an average of four points whereas its losses came by an average of 15.7.

It's also worth noting that the Timberwolves have only suffered back-to-back home losses once since March 3. They've played 17 home games since that date and have gone 4-1 SU following a loss.

At the end of the day, I'm taking the Timberwolves to even things up tonight. This series feels like one that's destined to go seven games, meaning the T-wolves have to win at home at some point. Again, they know how to bounce back from adversity at Target Center, so look for Chris Finch's team to find a way to beat the Mavericks.

Having said that, I will be sticking with the Mavs on the spread. Minnesota was the four-point favorite in Game 1 and wound up losing by three points. The Timberwolves are also 2-4 ATS in their last six games and 3-7 ATS in their 10 previous outings on a Friday, whereas the Mavericks are 5-1 ATS in their last six road outings.

Even if I expect the Timberwolves to win, I won't be surprised if the Mavericks keep things closer than projected or pull off another upset.
