Game 2: The postseason is built on storylines, and the Guardians find themselves in one tonight. After dropping game one at home to the Tigers, Cleveland now faces a must-win scenario in game two of the Wild Card series. The pressure shifts to Tanner Bibee, who takes the mound against Tigers right-hander Casey Mize. Both pitchers enter with above-average ratings on Batters-Box, which sets up a tightly contested matchup.
The spotlight, of course, leans toward Detroit's young star Riley Greene, the only elite-rated hitter in this series. But October has a way of producing unlikely heroes, and that is where my focus turns. Instead of leaning into the obvious star power, I am digging deeper to find value on a lesser-known name in Cleveland's lineup. Baseball in October is not always about the biggest names; sometimes it is the rookies and role players who define the moment.

After the Tigers grabbed game one of the Wild Card series, the Guardians face a must-win game two at home. Tanner Bibee takes the ball for Cleveland, while Casey Mize gets the start for Detroit. Both arms enter with above-average matchup ratings on Batters-Box. The lone elite-rated hitter in this matchup is Tigers star Riley Greene, who continues to shine in big moments.

Instead of going with the obvious play, I wanted to dig deeper and truly sweat something out this afternoon. My target is George Valera to record a hit. The Guardians rookie right fielder made his debut a month ago and is now slotted second in the order for just his second career postseason start. Over his first month, Valera has posted a .220 batting average with a .748 OPS. Not eye-popping numbers, but opportunity matters. Batting second means plenty of at-bats, and Mize's recent struggles against left-handed hitters provide a window to exploit.
Mize vs. Valera
Valera actually grades out as the highest-rated Guardian on the slate. It is a small sample size, but the advanced metrics like what he has shown early. Mize has been vulnerable to lefties, allowing 42% hard contact over his last 30 faced, with a 6.00 ERA and 4.64 xFIP. During that span, opponents own a .333 expected batting average and a .442 expected slugging percentage against him.
Digging deeper into Mize's arsenal, nearly 70% of his pitches grade below league average per FanGraphs. His best pitch, the slider, is thrown only 15% of the time. That is notable because Valera has handled sliders well in his short time, with a .279 expected batting average, .407 expected slugging, and .408 expected wOBA over the past month. Combine that with his success against the rest of Mize's mix, and I am comfortable paying the -130 juice for Valera to record a hit tonight.
In a matchup where the Guardians desperately need to even the series, I am backing a rookie to make an impact. Valera may not carry the same star power as Jose Ramirez, but his spot in the order, combined with Mize's vulnerability against left-handed bats, creates the perfect storm for value. The metrics back up the play, and sometimes October baseball is defined by the unexpected contributors. In a do-or-die setting, I am betting on Valera to deliver when Cleveland needs it most. The number may feel sharp, but the situation points directly toward a rookie stepping up big.
