Welcome to my MLB expert picks today! We have a tiny MLB slate on Thursday, Sept. 3, but a couple of totals are sticking out to me. One is an afternoon matchup in Houston, where the Astros draw a veteran starter who has been getting hit hard all season. The other comes late on the West Coast, where a major ballpark change could help two pitchers outperform their ugly surface-level ERAs. Let's dive into my best MLB bets for Sept. 3 and find a couple of winners.

MLB Expert Picks Today: Thursday, Sept. 3

We'll start in Houston, where the White Sox visit the Astros for a 2:10 PM ET matchup. Luis Castillo gets the ball for Chicago, with Hunter Brown taking the mound for Houston.
White Sox vs. Astros Pitching Matchup – 9/3/26
- Chicago White Sox: RHP Luis Castillo
- Houston Astros: RHP Hunter Brown
I'm attacking the over in Houston.
Castillo is just not the same pitcher he was in his prime. The ERA is north of 5.00, the strikeouts have dried up, and the batted-ball profile is ugly. He is allowing well above-average hard-hit rates and barrels, does not keep the ball on the ground enough, and has already surrendered 23 homers this season.
That is not a great formula against the Astros.
The Astros' offense has been solid for much of the summer, and Castillo no longer gets to pitch in Seattle's T-Mobile Park. That is a huge deal. T-Mobile is one of the better parks for pitchers, while Daikin Park can be a much less forgiving place for someone who gives up loud contact and elevated baseballs.
Hunter Brown should be the better starter here. His expected ERA remains strong, and he does a good job keeping the ball on the ground. Still, there is a path for Chicago to contribute to this number.
Brown's chase rate ranks in just the ninth percentile, which could create opportunities for the White Sox's left-handed power bats. Munetaka Murakami and Colson Montgomery are the names I am looking at. They do not need to go crazy, either. If Chicago can scratch across a few runs, Houston should have a real chance to do the heavy lifting against Castillo.
The total is sitting at 8.5 runs, and that feels low for this setup. Give me the over.
MLB Expert Best Bet: Mariners vs. Athletics (9/3/26)

Next, we head to Seattle, where the Mariners host the Athletics for a 4:10 PM ET matchup. Rookie Kade Anderson gets the ball for the Mariners, while Jack Perkins takes the mound for the Athletics.
Athletics vs. Mariners Pitching Matchup – 9/3/26
- Athletics: RHP Jack Perkins
- Seattle Mariners: RHP Kade Anderson
This one is all about trusting the underlying metrics and respecting the ballpark change.
Anderson has had a little bit of a bumpy start to his MLB career, but I am betting on the talent and pedigree. The rookie has legitimate stuff, and he gets a watered-down Athletics lineup in a friendly pitching environment.
Then we have Perkins, who is the more interesting side of this total. The 6.42 ERA is hideous. There is no sugarcoating it. But the expected ERA is all the way down at 4.01, which is roughly league average and tells us he has been much better than the surface number suggests. Perkins owns an 84th-percentile chase rate, an above-average whiff rate, and a respectable strikeout profile.
His home ERA has been a disaster, but pitching in Sacramento's Sutter Health Park has not exactly helped. Getting away from that environment and into T-Mobile Park is a massive upgrade. Seattle is one of the better places in baseball for run prevention, particularly compared to the offensive conditions Perkins has been dealing with at home.
The Mariners can be aggressive and free-swinging, which is a good matchup for a pitcher with Perkins' chase and whiff numbers. Anderson has enough talent to keep the Athletics quiet on the other side, and both starters get a meaningful park upgrade for this matchup.
A 7.5-run total can make bettors nervous, especially when they see a 6.42 ERA next to Perkins' name. But I think the matchup, ballpark, and underlying numbers tell a much friendlier story.
Give me the under.
