We are heading into a sweaty evening in Sacramento. Temperatures will be near 100 degrees at first pitch with light winds pushing out to dead center. It sets the stage perfectly for a potential breakout night from Matt Olson.
Olson has been seeing the ball well in this series, going 3-for-8 over his last two games. While all three hits have been singles, there is a sense that something bigger is coming. Tonight's matchup checks every box.
Let us start with some of Olson's splits:
Versus Lefties on the Road: .286 batting average, 1.047 OPS, 182 wRC+
Overall Road Splits: .269 BA, .491 SLG, .879 OPS
Simply put, Olson has been slightly better away from home and quietly lethal against left-handed pitching. He takes on Athletics starter JP Sears tonight, a southpaw who has looked serviceable over his last few starts. However, that recent success came against three struggling offenses: the Giants, Yankees, and Guardians. Before that, a capable Houston lineup shelled him for five earned runs on five hits in just 3.1 innings.
Olson vs. Sears
According to Batters-Box, Sears is the lowest-rated pitcher on the slate and the data backs it up. He is allowing 37% hard contact and owns a 5.63 ERA at home, with opponents hitting .276 against him in his own park. Sears leans heavily on a fastball-slider combo, which makes up nearly 80% of his pitch mix. Against lefties this season, those pitches are getting hit hard. A .303 batting average, .606 slugging, and .395 wOBA. That is essentially batting practice.
Olson happens to be Atlanta's top-rated bat versus that pitch mix, per Baseball Savant. Against fastballs and sliders, he holds an average above .250, an OPS over .760, and a wRC+ of 121 or higher.
For the price, the matchup, and the weather, this is a great spot to back Olson over 1.5 total bases. The heat is on, the ball should carry, and Olson feels due to make some serious noise.
