Misc.

After a wild regional round, this year's NCAA Division I baseball tournament is down to 16 teams, with the super regionals set to start today.

The diamond equivalent of March Madness always features some degree of chaos. After all, only two number one overall seeds (Miami in 1999, Tennessee in 2024) have won the College World Series since the tournament's current format was introduced in 1999.

And in addition to Fresno State's miraculous title run in 2008 and Coastal Carolina's championship in 2016, the likes of San Jose State, Missouri State, Stony Brook, UC Santa Barbara, and Oral Roberts have all made it to Omaha in that time, and countless other mid-majors have made surprise runs to the super regional round, such as Dallas Baptist, Davidson, and Kennesaw State.

So, the road to Omaha is rarely ever smooth sailing for power conference teams, even in this era of college sports.

This year, however, the chaos appears to have kicked back up a notch or three.

UCLA and Georgia Tech went into the regionals as the top two seeds and with high hopes, but both the Bruins and Yellow Jackets were sent packing. And though nine top 16 seeds remain in contention to reach the College World Series, including five of the top eight, we will see either Troy or Little Rock in Omaha, as well as potentially St. John's (who defeated No. 7 national seed Florida State twice and won the Tallahassee Regional as a No. 4 seed) and Cal Poly.
