CWS Elimination Game: Stanford vs Tennessee
The Cardinal take on the Volunteers on Monday afternoon. The winner moves on, while the loser gets sent home, as their season is over.
The stakes are high in this winner-takes-all contest, and all eyes will be on likely starters, Quinn Matthews and Chase Dollander.
Eight teams entered the CWS last weekend, and so far only the Virginia Cavaliers have been sent home. Today, one of these two squads will be the 2nd team eliminated from the 2023 College World Series.
Let's take a deeper look into this contest.
CWS Weekend Recap
Both of these teams played games on Saturday, June 17th. Both teams were defeated, which is why they face off today in an elimination game.
Stanford, ranked 8th in the country, lost to #1 overall seed, Wake Forest, in heartbreaking fashion. Stanford was leading 2-1 going into the bottom of the 8th, before giving up two runs to the Demon Deacons that would eventually decide the game.
The #5 ranked LSU Tigers took down unranked Tennessee by a score of 6-3 on Friday. The Tigers jumped out to a lead and never looked back. LSU went up 2-0 by the end of the 3rd, and extended that leas to 5-0 by the end of the 7th. Tennessee would score 3 runs in the top of the 8th to make it interesting, but the Tigers scored another one and eventually took the game.
Because of the performances this weekend, both teams are staring at the end of their season. Only one team can advance, with the winner of this game moving on to face the loser of Wake Forest/LSU in an elimination game on Tuesday.
Today I am putting on my Orange and Smokey Grey and backing the Tennessee Volunteers.
I think Tennessee is the more established ball club and played tougher competition during the regular season.
To be frank, SEC > Pac-12.
The unranked Volunteers are the betting favorite against the #8 Stanford Cardinal, which seems a little fishy to me. Stanford lost in heartbreaking fashion to the top seed Demon Deacons, whereas Tennessee got beaten to a pulp by fellow SEC rival LSU.
I think the Volunteers bounce back in this must-win game and take down Stanford.
I'll be a little greedy and take Tennessee -1.5 (+110).
Bonus Bet: I think this stays under 10 as well. I'll pay the -130 it costs.
Tennessee Volunteers: 5
Stanford Cardinal: 2
