Ontario's regulated iGaming market started the year by reaching an unprecedented milestone. Newly released data for January 2026 shows a market that continues to defy expectations.
Total wagering volume reached a staggering $9.52 billion for the month. This represents a 21.4% increase compared to the same period last year. Consequently, Ontario continues to cement its status as a premier global hub for regulated digital wagering.
Canada Online Casinos Lead the Surge in January 2026
The true engine behind this historic growth is the exceptional performance of Canada online casinos. Players in the province showed a massive appetite for digital gaming throughout the month.
Specifically, gamblers wagered $8.18 billion on online slots and live dealer games. This volume underscores the shifting preferences of the local gaming community.
The financial results for operators were equally impressive. The iCasino non-adjusted gross gaming revenue (NAGGR) reached $308.9 million. This figure represents a remarkable 33.7% increase compared to January 2025.
Interestingly, this revenue growth significantly outpaced the 25.6% rise in actual wagering volume. This trend suggests higher operator efficiency or a shift toward high-margin games.
Currently, casino gaming accounts for 77% of the total market revenue. This vertical clearly dominates the landscape of Ontario gambling.
Canada Online Sportsbooks Face Stabilizing Trends
While casinos thrived, Canada online sportsbooks experienced a more tempered performance during the same period. Operators reported $86.7 million in sports betting revenue for January. This total marks a 5.8% decrease year-over-year.
Additionally, the wagering volume on sports dipped marginally by roughly 0.25%.
However, industry experts suggest these numbers require proper context. January 2025 was an unusually strong month for Ontario online sportsbooks, generating $92 million. That specific revenue peak was not surpassed again until November 2025.
Therefore, the current dip reflects a return to market stability rather than a lack of interest. Sports betting now represents about 22% of the total regulated wagering activity.
Ontario iGaming Projections: Can the Surge Continue?
As we look toward the spring, many wonder if this momentum is sustainable. Most indicators suggest that Ontario's iGaming market will maintain its upward trajectory.
The province recorded over 1.32 million active player accounts in January alone. This represents a 19.9% increase in participation compared to last year.
Furthermore, new operators are still preparing to enter the competitive landscape. The arrival of giants like DAZN Bet later this year will likely spark more growth.
Additionally, the upcoming launch of a regulated market in Alberta may create a healthy cross-provincial synergy. While the market is maturing, the consistent demand for diverse gaming options remains high.
Ontario appears well-positioned to break even more records as 2026 progresses.
