Florida regulators are ramping up responsible betting messaging as the NFL and college football seasons get underway.
The Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) issued its advisory on September 3. It urged Floridians to make informed choices when betting on football and avoid unauthorized operators.
The timing also coincides with Responsible Gaming Education Month (RGEM). The American Gaming Association (AGA) leads the nationwide initiative each September to promote gaming literacy and consumer education.
Football remains one of the biggest drivers of sports betting activity in the US. The AGA estimates Americans will legally wager $29.5 billion on the 2026 NFL season through regulated commercial sportsbooks. That figure is nearly unchanged from the $29.4 billion wagered during the 2025 NFL season.
Florida Regulator Warns Against Unauthorized Sportsbooks
Florida has a unique sports betting market compared with most US states. The state generally does not permit residents to place legal online sports wagers through commercial sportsbooks outside the Seminole Tribe framework.
The 2021 Gaming Compact between Florida and the Seminole Tribe established the current structure. Hard Rock Bet operates the state's legal online sportsbook under that framework.
The commission warns that US online sportsbooks licensed in another state do not automatically have permission to operate in Florida. Unless the sportsbook operates through or in conjunction with the Seminole Tribe, Florida considers the wager most likely illegal.
That distinction becomes especially important during football season. Bettors searching for NFL odds or NCAAF odds may encounter unauthorized platforms offering similar markets.
Responsible Gaming Education Month Adds Broader Context
The September 3 advisory arrived during Responsible Gaming Education Month, giving Florida's campaign a wider national context.
The AGA describes RGEM as an opportunity to highlight responsible gaming efforts and promote consumer education. The campaign runs throughout September, making the football season a natural focus for regulators and industry stakeholders.
Florida gambling regulators have also highlighted RGEM through the Florida Lottery and FGCC. A September 1 announcement promoted responsible gaming education before the commission issued its football-season advisory two days later.
The timing matters because football creates a steady stream of betting opportunities. Weekly NFL games, college matchups and live wagering markets can encourage more frequent betting throughout the season.
FGCC Encourages Bettors to Stay in Control
The FGCC urged bettors to make deliberate decisions rather than allowing wagers to interfere with daily responsibilities or finances.
Bettors can use tools such as deposit limits, wagering limits, cooling-off periods and self-exclusion to manage their activity. These options can create useful boundaries before betting becomes difficult to control.
The commission also highlighted the importance of recognizing when betting starts becoming disruptive. Chasing losses, increasing wagers to recover money or continuing to bet despite financial pressure can signal that a bettor needs to step away.
Those risks can become more pronounced during football season because games provide frequent opportunities to place additional wagers. Live betting can also make it easier to continue wagering after an unsuccessful bet.
College Football Adds Another Responsible Gambling Concern
College football brings additional considerations because younger audiences often engage heavily with the sport.
Students and young adults can encounter betting discussions through social media, group chats and sports communities. That constant exposure can make frequent wagering seem like a routine part of following games.
The broader legal sports betting market also faces concerns about younger consumers. AGA's 2026 NFL analysis highlighted differences in age requirements across regulated sports betting markets.
For Florida regulators, education remains an important part of addressing those risks. Clear information can help bettors understand both the financial risks and the legal boundaries surrounding sports wagering.
Florida Enters a Major Football Betting Period
The start of the NFL and college football seasons marks one of the busiest stretches of the sports betting calendar.
The AGA's $29.5 billion NFL wagering estimate illustrates the scale of that activity. The projection includes preseason games, futures wagers, the playoffs and Super Bowl LXI.
Florida's market remains notably different from states with several competing commercial sportsbooks. Its legal online sports betting system is tied to the Seminole Tribe, with Hard Rock Bet serving as the authorized online operator.
That makes operator selection particularly important for Florida bettors. A familiar sportsbook name or an accessible betting website does not necessarily mean it can legally accept wagers from Florida residents.
The FGCC's message is therefore broader than a general warning about betting behavior. It also tells consumers to understand the legal market before placing a wager.
Florida's Responsible Betting Message Comes at a Key Time
The FGCC's September advisory arrives as football betting activity begins to accelerate nationwide. At the same time, RGEM has placed responsible gambling education at the center of the industry's September messaging.
The Sunshine State's approach combines those themes with a specific warning about unauthorized sportsbooks. The state wants bettors to use legal channels while remaining aware of how gambling fits into their finances and daily lives.
The scale of football wagering makes that message particularly timely. With the AGA projecting $29.5 billion in legal NFL wagers for the 2026 season, millions of Americans are expected to participate.
Florida bettors can also seek confidential assistance through the state's PlayWise helpline at 1-833-PLAYWISE (1-833-752-9947).
As the football season unfolds, regulators are urging consumers to make informed choices, use authorized betting platforms and recognize when it is time to step away.
