North Carolina Sports Betting Hits $666M in January 2026

industry

The legal gambling landscape in the Tar Heel State continues to flourish as new reports highlight a record-breaking start to the year.

According to a report from the North Carolina State Lottery Commission, sports wagering activity reached impressive heights in January 2026. This surge confirms that the state has become a premier hub for US online sportsbooks. Enthusiasts across the state are fueling a market that shows no signs of slowing down.

North Carolina Sports Betting Sees Record January 2026 Numbers

North Carolina recently posted a sports betting handle of more than $666 million for January 2026. This figure represents a significant 7% increase compared to the same month last year.

Remarkably, the state has now surpassed the $600 million wagering mark for five consecutive months. This consistent performance proves that North Carolina gambling is now a staple of the local economy.

The momentum largely follows the excitement of the professional and collegiate football calendars. Between September 2025 and January 2026, the state experienced its most active period since the market launched.

During this five-month stretch, bettors placed over $3.55 billion in total wagers. The peak of this activity coincided with the closing of the 2025 football season. Fans flooded US online sportsbooks to back their favorite teams during the playoffs.

The Financial and Tax Impact of Rising Handles

High wagering volumes translate directly into significant financial gains for the state. In January alone, North Carolina collected approximately $14.4 million in tax revenue.

Since the market opened in March 2024, the state has gathered over $250 million in taxes. Operators currently pay an 18% tax rate on their gross wagering revenue.

These funds support vital community initiatives throughout the region. For example, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services receives a portion of these proceeds.

Additionally, thirteen different UNC System athletic departments benefit from this revenue. The money also funds youth sports programs and a major events recruitment fund. Consequently, every bet placed helps improve public services and local infrastructure.

Can the Surging Market Maintain This Streak?

Industry analysts wonder if the state can keep up this blistering pace. The January report did not even include the massive betting volume from the Super Bowl

That event typically generates the highest single-day handle of the entire year. Therefore, February numbers will likely challenge the records set in January.

As the state moves toward the spring, basketball will become the primary driver of growth. Residents are known for their passion for college hoops, which should sustain high engagement.

If current trends continue, North Carolina gambling will likely see even higher totals in 2027. The market remains one of the fastest-growing sectors in the United States gaming industry. Robust regulation and high fan interest suggest that the streak is far from over.
