New Jersey Sports Betting Revenue Falls 37.7% in June

industry

New Jersey sports betting operators posted record wagering activity in June 2026. Yet, strong bettor results pushed sportsbook revenue sharply lower.

According to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (NJDGE) report, the state's sportsbooks accepted approximately $917.2 million in wagers during the month. That figure marked a 16% increase from June 2025.

Despite the record handle, operators generated only $57.3 million in sports betting revenue. The figure represented a 37.7% decline from the $91.9 million reported one year earlier.

The results created a striking contrast for New Jersey gambling. Bettors flooded the market during a packed sports calendar. At the same time, winning outcomes reduced the amount sportsbooks retained.

Key Factors Behind New Jersey's June Sports Betting Numbers

The NBA Finals and FIFA World Cup drove much of New Jersey's record betting activity. The New York Knicks attracted significant betting interest during their championship run.

The Knicks captured their first NBA title since 1973. Their success created major liabilities for sportsbooks across the region.

Bettors also backed several popular teams and outcomes during the FIFA World Cup. The expanded 48-team tournament began on June 11.

The World Cup created a major influx of betting activity across the United States. New Jersey's market benefited from that increased interest.

However, the results favored bettors during several key matchups. Consequently, sportsbooks paid out more winnings than expected. The state's sports betting hold fell to 6.24% in June. That figure nearly halved the 11.62% hold recorded during June 2025.

The lower hold explains why record wagering failed to produce stronger revenue. Sportsbooks accepted more bets, but retained a smaller share of those wagers.

The market also generated $12.45 million in state taxes. That figure fell from approximately $13.1 million in June 2025.

Meanwhile, online betting dominated the market during the month. Online operators generated approximately $891.9 million in wagers.

Retail sportsbooks contributed roughly $25.3 million to the total handle. Yet, the retail segment finished June with a loss exceeding $640,000.

That result represents a rare occurrence for New Jersey's retail sportsbook market. The losses reflected unusually strong results for bettors during the month.

Major operators also posted sharply different results. FanDuel led New Jersey with approximately $25 million in sports betting revenue.

DraftKings followed with approximately $13.7 million in revenue. The figures show how the state's largest online operators performed during a volatile month.

The June results also highlight the volatility facing US online sportsbooks. Major sporting events can increase handle while simultaneously reducing operator margins.

NJ Online Sportsbooks Trail the State's Broader Gaming Market

New Jersey's wider gaming market delivered a stronger performance during June. Casinos, racetracks, and their partners generated $585.6 million in total gaming revenue.

That figure increased 0.7% from the $581.6 million recorded in June 2025. The broader market therefore remained positive despite the sports betting downturn.

US online casinos provided the strongest growth during the month. Internet gaming revenue reached $271 million in June.

The figure represented a 17.5% increase from the $230.7 million reported one year earlier. Internet gaming also remained the state's largest gaming revenue segment.

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement reported $1.59 billion in internet gaming revenue through June. That total increased 15% from the previous year.

Land-based casinos produced $257.3 million in June revenue. Their performance declined 0.7% from the $259 million recorded in June 2025.

The state's nine casino hotels still generated significant revenue. Yet, online gaming continued to expand at a faster pace.

Overall, New Jersey's gaming market generated $3.52 billion during the first half of 2026. That total increased 6% from the previous year's $3.32 billion.

The state collected $81 million in gross gaming taxes during June. Year-to-date tax collections reached $500.5 million.

Projections for the New Jersey Sportsbooks Moving Forward

New Jersey's sports betting market enters the second half of 2026 with strong demand. The June handle showed that major events continue to attract substantial wagering activity.

The revenue decline also demonstrates the risks that accompany high-profile sports calendars. Bettor-friendly results can quickly reduce sportsbook margins.

The FIFA World Cup remains a major factor for the market during July. The tournament's knockout rounds will create additional betting opportunities.

More evenly matched games could produce stronger sportsbook results. Still, unexpected outcomes could continue creating volatility for operators.

The market also gained new customers during the World Cup. Some of those bettors may continue using sportsbooks after the tournament ends.

Meanwhile, New Jersey's online casino sector provides a more consistent source of growth. Its strong June performance helped offset the sports betting revenue decline.

Therefore, New Jersey gambling enters the second half of 2026 with a mixed outlook. Sports betting demand remains strong, while operator revenue depends heavily on event outcomes.

The state's overall gaming market remains healthy. Yet, June showed that record betting activity does not always translate into record sportsbook profits.
