Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. Montreal Alouettes CFL Week 8 Prediction & Picks: Expect a Mismatch at Molson Stadium?

Through the first third of the CFL season, the Montreal Alouettes have firmly established themselves as the team to beat in the East Division. And with a win tonight over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (7 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network), the Alouettes will only further consolidate their lofty place in the standings.

Last week, the Tiger-Cats (3-3) picked up their first win without Bo Levi Mitchell, surviving a spirited comeback from the Toronto Argonauts in a 24-23 win at Hamilton Stadium.

Tre Ford did his job in his first start for the Ticats, accounting for 327 total yards (218 passing, 109 rushing), which is encouraging for Hamilton's long-term hopes of staying afloat without Mitchell, who is out indefinitely after suffering a broken ankle against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers three weeks ago.

Tonight, however, the outlook is not an optimistic one for the team's hopes of hanging with Montreal (5-1), who kept up its prolific point production last week with a 38-32 win at Calgary. The Alouettes led 22-0 early in the second quarter but saw that lead evaporate as former Alouette Vernon Adams Jr. threw three fourth-quarter touchdown passes to tie things up at 32 with three minutes left.

But the home crowd would go home unhappy as Montreal marched down the field to retake the lead with just over a minute left, then sealed the win by forcing a fumble as the Stampeders were on the cusp of a winning score.

A takeaway was also decisive in Montreal's overtime win in Hamilton in Week 1. But the rematch isn't expected to be as close according to Lucky Rebel and other top online sportsbooks, as the Alouettes are favored by nearly double digits.

Though they had to hold on for the win against Toronto, there were a lot of encouraging things for Hamilton last week after a couple of rough showings without Mitchell.

However, don't expect the Tiger-Cats to keep the Alouettes from extending their lead atop the East Division, and while the Alouettes have made a habit of playing close games this season (all six decided by seven or fewer points), I don't see this matchup going down to the wire.

Though the spread is straightforward for me, the total is a slightly tougher call because the Ticats don't have their star signal-caller, but with totals of 57, 67, 61, 72, 67, and 70 in Montreal's games this season, the over is where I would lean with a total pick, though I would recommend buying down to 57 just to avoid potentially being bitten by the hook.

Tre Ford Over 46.5 Rushing Yards (-115 at Lucky Rebel)

In his first CFL start in over a year, Ford showed why he is clearly the Tiger-Cats' best option at quarterback while Mitchell is sidelined.

His ability to make things happen with his legs is a valuable weapon, and even if he doesn't rack up yards like he did against the Argos, I expect him to have another productive game on the ground. Montreal entered Week 8 dead last in the CFL in average yards per rush at 6.5, seventh in rushing yards allowed per game (103.5), and sixth in sacks (10). If the Ticats manage to keep things competitive for four quarters, Ford's feet will likely be a big reason for it.

That said, I do expect Hamilton to have to play catch-up in this one. That brings the over on Ford's passing yards total into play. The Ticats may not have Mitchell, but they still have a talented group of pass-catchers, and if Ford has to put it in the air 30+ times tonight, this is a very reachable target.

Tyson Philpot Over 103.5 Receiving Yards (-115 at Lucky Rebel)

Speaking of talented pass-catchers, no receiver in the CFL has been as good at it this season as Philpot. He hit 50 catches and 800 yards for the season with five catches and 88 yards against the Stampeders. He was beaten on the stat sheet by his twin brother Jalen (six catches, 96 yards, TD) but took bragging rights on the scoreboard.

Even though it was a substandard performance relative to his run of four consecutive 100-yard games, Philpot remains on pace to shatter the CFL's single-season record for receiving yards and challenge the league's single-season record for receptions.

In the Week 1 win over the Tiger-Cats, Philpot had seven catches (on 11 targets) for 76 yards and a score. With Davis Alexander likely firing on all cylinders again, I like Philpot's chances to exceed that yardage total tonight and hit the century mark for the fifth time in 2026.
