When Jon Gruden was lured out of the television booth and back to the sidelines, there were no illusions that he would immediately lead the Raiders back to the success he did in his first tenure with the team. But Raiders fans would no doubt have hoped that by season four, the Raiders would be a playoff team.

Unfortunately for Gruden and Raiders fans, his first three seasons back with the franchise did not produce a single playoff berth, and this season is not expected to either. With a win total set at O/U 7 and odds of +350 to make the NFL playoffs, expectations are low for the Raiders’ second season in Las Vegas.

With no other clear-cut playoff team in the AFC West other than the Kansas City Chiefs, who are the NFL betting odds favorite to win Super Bowl LVI, could the Raiders finish second in the AFC West for the second straight season? Such a finish was not good enough to get into the playoffs last season and likely wouldn’t be this season, but exceeding expectations would give Gruden something to build on for next season.

Quarterback Derek Carr has thrown for over 4,000 yards for three straight seasons and posted a passer rating above 100 in each of the last two seasons, so the Raiders do have one of the better quarterbacks in the game. They also have a rising talent at running back in Josh Jacobs, who ran for over 1,000 yards last season, and one of the NFL’s best tight ends in Darren Waller. Three veteran offensive linemen in Trent Brown, Rodney Hudson, and Gabe Jackson were traded away in the offseason, which could be something to watch for with some talented defenses on the Raiders’ schedule early on.

But what will make or break the Raiders is defense, not offense. The Raiders had one of the worst defenses in the league last season, and a long season is ahead if that unit struggles again this season. They did use free agency and the draft to address the defense, but will those additions bring about the necessary improvement? We’ll find out early as the Raiders take on a quartet of playoff hopefuls right out of the gate.
