After consecutive losing seasons under Anthony Lynn, the Los Angeles Chargers enter the 2021 season with a new head coach in former Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. In his lone season with L.A.’s other NFL club, the Rams finished atop the stat charts in points allowed and yards allowed.

If he makes a big impression in his first season as a head coach, the Chargers could very well make a push for the postseason. That is certainly the expectation based on preseason NFL betting odds, which have the Chargers projected as the second-best team in the AFC West and a potential playoff hopeful.

Offensively, the Chargers appear to be in good hands in second-year quarterback Justin Herbert. Herbert was the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year after being drafted sixth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. After taking over the starting role in Week 2 when Tyrod Taylor suffered a collapsed lung when receiving a pain injection from a team doctor, Herbert put up numbers that would be good for a veteran, even more so for a rookie. He finished sixth in the NFL in passing yards (4,338) and tenth in touchdown passes (31), and he tossed only ten interceptions in 595 attempts. And after producing wins in only two of his first 11 starts, the Chargers won their last four games to finish 7-9. It wasn’t enough to salvage Lynn’s job, but it provided a good foundation for this season.

The Chargers were not a terrible defensive team last season, and they even ranked in the top ten in the NFL in passing yards allowed and total yards allowed. But the Chargers lost seven games by eight or fewer points, which is why they were in that 3-9 hole last season. If the defense can make more big plays in key moments and force more turnovers, this team could take a big step forward in the win column. The AFC has many talented teams, but the Chargers are certainly not far off from where they need to be to make a return to the postseason.
