After reaching Super Bowl LIV, the San Francisco 49ers took a big step back in 2020, finishing last in the NFC West with a 6-10 record. Injuries were the biggest reason for their downturn in fortunes, with starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo being limited to only six games due to ankle injuries.

NFL futures odds expect a big rebound from the 49ers in 2021, who drafted North Dakota State star Trey Lance to compete with Garoppolo for the nod under center. As the regular season approaches, only last season’s NFC Championship Game combatants, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers, are ahead of the 49ers as NFC favorites. And in a stacked NFC West, the 49ers edge out the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks as division favorites.

Is that label deserved? We will see. Last season was their third losing season in four seasons under coach Kyle Shanahan, and it is rare to see such short odds for a team that could very start a rookie quarterback by choice or by force. But oddsmakers see success in San Francisco regardless of who starts under center, focusing on the team’s overall talent level, the upward trajectory the 49ers were on prior to the 2020 season, and a stout defense that still managed to be one of the NFL’s better defenses in a tough situation last season.

Will the 49ers stay healthy enough to live up to lofty expectations and contend for a sixth Super Bowl title?
