A new era begins in Jacksonville, but will Urban Meyer and Trevor Lawrence bring success to DUVAL County? Meyer ended his second retirement from coaching to take the reins in Jacksonville, with the opportunity to work with one of the top quarterback prospects in recent history representing a compelling reason to return to the sidelines.

Meyer is renowned for his offensive success from his head coaching stops at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida, and Ohio State, but will it translate to results at the highest level? The pressure is not there to win or contend for the AFC South immediately, but tangible progress will go a long way in validating the franchise’s decision to lure Meyer out of retirement.

Fortunately, the Jaguars open the season with four potentially winnable games, which will give Lawrence some time to acclimate. Heading into the season, NFL futures odds have Lawrence as the favorite to be named Offensive Rookie of the Year, just ahead of Mac Jones of the New England Patriots, Justin Fields of the Chicago Bears, Trey Lance of the San Francisco 49ers, and Zach Wilson of the New York Jets. Jones, Lance, and Wilson are all on Jacksonville’s calendar later in the season, which could showcase where Lawrence is relative to his peers once he has a number of starts under his belt.

At the very least, the Jaguars should be infinitely more watchable and entertaining than they were over the last three seasons under Doug Marrone. After the Jaguars went 10-6 in 2017 and made a run to the AFC Championship Game, where they suffered an agonizing loss to Tom Brady and the New Patriots, the Jaguars won only 12 games over his last three seasons at the helm. The only way is up, and Jaguars fans will be hoping that a bright future is ahead with their new head coach and quarterback.
