Two domestic clubs go head to head today as the FIFA Club World Cup begins it's Round of 16 bracket play today. After Group Stage, we had 16 teams advance and now they battle it out in a single elimination bracket for the rest of the competition. This afternoon, two Brazilian squads face off as Palmeiras take on Botafogo.
These two teams already met once in their domestic league. They played to a scoreless draw back in March, and now go head to head again in this competition. Palmeiras was able to top their group after drawing with Inter Miami in the final match, while Botafogo lost their final match to Atlético Madrid. They still finished second in their group, and beat the UCL Champions and Group Winners, Paris Saint-Germain.
Today only one team can move on to the FIFA Club World Cup Semifinals.
Keep in mind, this is a 90 minute wager. These matchups are just single leg contests, meaning it is do or die tonight. If things are all tied up after 90 minutes, we will have extra time and penalty kicks, but we need Palmeiras to win in regulation in order to cash our bet.
I think they are capable.
Botafogo has succeeded in keeping their tournament matches low scoring, allowing just two goals across three group stage matches, shutting out PSG. But Palmeiras is going to be aggressive and force an increased pace in this game. They want to go, go, go, and they'll dare their opponent to try and keep up.
Ultimately, Botafogo was able to hold on in their Brazilian Serie A match. Today, I think Palmeiras is too much for them to handle. With the total being so low, clearly the books are expecting a very conservative match. I believe Palmeiras is better prepared to take advantage of what may be minimal chances in this one. Palmeiras have not beaten Botafogo in a head to head match in at least their last five meetings.
They should have all the motivation to come out on top this afternoon.
