Last night, Nashville SC successfully punched their ticket to the US Open Cup Final after beating the Philadelphia Union in their first semifinal match. Sam Surridge had a hat trick for the team from Music City, as they advanced with a dominating 3-1 victory over the top team in the Eastern Conference. Now two teams from the West go head to head in our second US Open Cup Semifinal tonight, as Minnesota United hosts Austin FC. Let's get into our favorite picks!

Diego Rubio and Austin FC are looking for a win against Minnesota United tonight on the road
We have already seen these squads face off twice this season, but both were back in May in MLS play. On May 3, Minnesota United shutout Austin FC down in Texas, beating them 3-0, which included an early own goal, as well as netting one in stoppage time to really put the nail in the coffin. However three weeks later, Austin FC sort of got revenge. They were down 1-0 early to Minnesota United on the road, but rallied for an equalizer to steal a point.
Now they are back in Minnesota tonight.
The hosts are unbeaten in their last four overall, and nine of their last 10 matches. They took down St. Louis City SC and the Chicago Fire to get to this semifinal match, and have the benefit of playing in their own stadium again. As for the visitors, Austin FC are coming off a shutout loss to FC Dallas and have been shaky in recent matches. They took down the Houston Dynamo at home, but needed penalty kicks to get past the San Jose Earthquakes out west in the US Open Cup Quarterfinals, however they also failed to score from the field in that match.
Will they be able to go into Minnesota and try to pull off this upset?
Matchup Information – Minnesota United vs. Austin FC – September 17
This is a dangerous match in my opinion. Neither team has lifted to US Open Cup before, so they will both want to bring that trophy home to their club. However, with minimal MLS matches remaining, the true focus should be on making sure they make the postseason.
Austin FC currently sits No. 7 on the Western Conference table, sitting just four points out of the No. 4 spot, and just two points ahead of No. 8. The top nine teams make it to the playoffs. Minnesota is No. 2 on the Western Conference table, and are just two points ahead of Vancouver at No. 3, and two points behind San Diego FC who sit on the top spot.
It is possible teams will be more focused on that part of this season as the MLS competition comes to a close, but I still think we see plenty of motivation from both benches.
This is a 90 minute bet, so we will need the hosts to win in regulation. If things are tied, we will see extra time and even penalty kicks if needed, but our bet will be settled after full time. Minnesota, please come to play and finish them off early.
They are unbeaten against this club this season, and have been quite dominating at home. They are 10-4-4 overall at Allianz Field this year, and all have been relatively good losses. Minnesota sits No. 2 on the Western Conference table. At home, their four losses have come to San Diego FC (No. 1), the Vancouver Whitecaps (No. 3), LAFC (No. 5) and the Colorado Rapids (No. 8). All of those teams are most likely making the playoffs, and three could be potential MLS Cup contenders.
Point being, at home, Minnesota usually handles business against inferior teams. While Austin has been moving up the standings, they already escaped from the Twin Cities with a point in league play. I see the hosts dominating them on the pitch tonight, asserting that they are the top dawg, and stamping their ticket to the US Open Cup Final on October 1.
