Mexico vs. Honduras: Gold Cup Betting Odds

Mexico won their group with ease, tying with Costa Rica at seven points, but advancing on goal differential. They beat the Dominican Republic and Suriname before playing Costa Rica to a scoreless draw, which is all they needed to top the group. Mexico went on the beat Saudi Arabia in the Gold Cup Quarterfinals, 2-0, to earn a spot in their 10th straight Gold Cup Semifinals.

The defending Champs have been in three straight Gold Cup Final matches, winning two of the last three and three of the last five overall.

Honduras have not been back to the Gold Cup Semifinals since they reached this stage three straight tournaments in 2009, 2011, and 2013. However they failed to move on to the final each time. Could this year be different?

Honduras was dominated by Canada to open group stage play, but went on to win their next two matches and secure the second spot in the group. They faced Panama in the quarterfinals, and after falling down 1-0, they found an 82′ minute equalizer to force extra time. Eventually, Honduras would advance on PKs.

Can they scare up another upset tonight against Mexico? Or will the clear favorites make a fourth consecutive final match?

These lines are fishy to me. Mexico is a huge favorite, and is priced at around -650 just to advance. They are plus money to win by two goals, but the books barely have these clubs netting two goals combined. In my eyes, this is a low scoring Mexican victory.

Honduras does not want to get into a shootout with this team, and because of that, I see them being extra conservative on the defensive end. Mexico will attack, attack, attack, and eventually break through, but I don't see it getting out of control.

So let's look at this again. The total is at 2.5, slightly shaded to the under. But Mexico's team total at over 1.5 is priced at -185, while they are +102 to win this game by two. Doing some line reading, this match has 1-0, 2-0, or 2-1 Mexico written all over it (and I believe some books offer that exact score grouping).

Regardless, I see Mexico finishing the job in 90 minutes without conceding a goal. Now, you might be asking, "Why not just take Mexico ML/BTTS NO at -125?" I'm glad you asked.

Value. We are hunting value, and for 2-1 odds, I'll take Mexico to win in a low scoring game. Obviously we are limiting ourselves to only two winning results: A 1-0 or 2-0 Mexican win. However, we are getting some extra bang for our buck excluding a 3-0 or more victory, as I trust Honduras' defense to hold strong for most of the match.
