Manchester City vs. Manchester United English Premier League Betting Odds

Bitter rivals meet up once again, and while the club names are huge, neither have been performing up to standards so far this year. Will we see either of them turn things around? Or will both continue to have a sluggish start to the season?

Manchester United opened up their season hosting Arsenal. The Gunners scored early on, forcing United to go on the attack all match long. They held possession for over 61% of the match, produced seven shots on target off of 22 total attempts, but it wasn't enough to equalize against the Gunners. After that, Manchester United drew with Fulham on the road, lost to Grimsby Town in penalties in the second round of the Carabao Cup, and just beat Burnley at home, needing a stoppage time penalty to get the victory. They haven't really looked good, but neither has their opponent.

Manchester City opened up EPL play with a 4-0 win against the Wolverhampton Wanderers. People thought they might be back (me), but then they laid a couple of stinkers in their next matches. City hosted Tottenham, losing 2-0 to the Spurs in their home opener, and followed it up by losing to Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 on the road. City held a 1-0 lead after 34 minutes thanks to Erling Haaland, but conceded a 67 minute PK and an 89 minute winner to lose on the road. Surely, after a two week break (from EPL play), they'll be ready to bounce back at home in the Derby.

As I stated above, history has been on the side of United recently. Manchester City has not defeated their crosstown rival since March 3, 2024, in EPL play. They have been unsuccessful in beating United in four straight matches, and they've lost outright twice.

Last season, United upset them at the Etihad 2-1 in the EPL, and held them scoreless when they came to Old Trafford. On Sunday, I expect City to assert their dominance over their rival once again. You think they aren't aware of their own cold streak against a club they call "Little Brother"? Regardless of some of their guys coming back from international duty, City is plenty deep and has tons of legs to produce against United, who is nowhere near as stacked on the bench.

If this is a trap, I will gladly fall for it. The number has ticked down a bit since opening, but this is more than playable for me. I have faith in Manchester City, I do not expect Pep Guardiola to rest many players, expecting them to handle business and be ready to go against a rival.

Sure, personnel has changed since prior seasons, but that doesn't change the fact that United remain unbeaten in their last four against City. The rivalry is more than alive, and City certainly know the stakes. In their scoreless draw at Old Trafford, City dominated over 58% of possession and outshot their hosts 5-2 on target. At the Etihad in the EPL contest, City led 1-0 after the 36′ minute, holding that lead nearly to the end. United came through with an 88 minute penalty to equalize and found a winner in the 90′ as well, despite City controlling 52% of possession and winning the corner kick battle 8-2.

Point being, City have dominated but have not gotten the results they wanted and think they deserve. Look for them to leave no doubt in the Manchester Derby on Sunday.
