Portugal and France battle it out in Hamburg today as the EURO 2024 Quarterfinals begin play! The winner of this match has a date with either Germany or Spain in the Semifinals, as we have four European Giants on one side of the bracket.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal battle Kylian Mbappe and France, and holy cow, what a showdown this will be. We have a player who is widely considered the 2nd best player of all time in all of soccer, facing the most exciting young winger in the game. Mbappe actually just joined Ronaldo's former team as well to add to the narratives surrounding this match.

Can France Advance to Semifinals?

This might be the most highly anticipated matchup of the Semifinals, as the 2nd and 6th ranked teams in the world face off. Two of the world's greatest players take the pitch, and we are in for an absolute thriller.
After finishing 2nd in their group without a loss, France took down Belgium 1-0 in the Round of 16. A late winner in the 85th minute allowed the French to advance, officially an OG off of Jan Vertonghen. Now the French have a date with the Portuguese with a chance at the Semifinals on the line.
Portugal advanced by winning their group, but arguably they looked off in their most recent two matches. They lost to Georgia, 2-0 in their final Group Stage, but they knew they were already on top of their group. However, they faced Slovenia in the Round of 16, and played to a scoreless draw. Portugal eventually advanced on PKs, thanks to Diogo Costa saving all three penalty kicks he faced.

I know, I know, nobody likes betting an under. Especially with Ronaldo and Mbappe on the pitch at the same time. But look, Portugal hasn't scored in two matches, but their back line has been solid. Despite allowing two goals to an inferior Georgian team, they only let the Czech score once, and shutout Turkey and Slovenia. Their offense has not looked primed and ready, and I do not anticipate them scoring at all.
As for the French, they've gone under this number in 3/4 matches, pushing in the one outlier in their 1-1 draw to Poland. They haven't netted more than 1 goal in any of their games, and playing against a tough backline could give them some extra trouble. I think there will be plenty of attention on Mbappe, focusing on making the other French attackers beat them.
Ultimately, I think we see this end nil-nil in 90 minutes. We have two very tough teams, who know the implications of this match. It's do or die, and I trust defenses to come to play in this critical EURO Quarterfinal, with a slight lean on France to advance.
