John Carlson gets involved on the offense plenty for the Capitals
The Capitals will certainly need some offense in order to take down the Rangers at home tonight. After being shutout by the Lightning, they now face a New York squad that ranks 2nd goals against and 3rd in goals for. The Rangers are beating teams by an average score of 4.25-2.00, and against a defensive minded team like Washington, they could have a tough time scoring.
The Capitals defense allows just 26 shots per game which leads the NHL, and they are Top 10 in Penalty minutes, doing a great job of staying out of the box. When they do play a man down, they kill 83% of penalties, and only score 8% of the time on a man advantage. While the Rangers do have more penalty minutes, they have a higher penalty kill percentage, and score 25% of the time on the PP, ranking Top 10 in the league. I don't see this coming into play too much, but I do see Washington being more aggressive on offense coming off of a shutout.
The Rangers don't allow too many shots either, and while they pepper the net over 30+ times per contest, tonight could be a slow day at the office. Against the Capitals defense, the Rangers are not going to be gifted as many chances as they are used to. Washington is very sound defensively, and I see them being conservative in order to slow down a team scoring over 4 goals per game.
In regulation, 60 minute money line, 3 way money line. My famous last words.
We are backing the Rangers on the road today, mainly because of how Shesterkin has been playing. As a team, the Rangers allow just 2 goals per game and score over 4. Shesterkin saves over 92% of shots faced this year, and against a Capitals team that doesn't take too many shots, I see him having any easy night tonight.
On paper, the Rangers are the better team, top to bottom. Tonight I think that comes into play as the Capitals try to bounce back from the mental battle of being shutout. It won't get any easier to score facing Igor tonight, and I see the Rangers being able to escape with a victory today.
