Analysis & Breakdown

El Capitan

The New York Knicks just lost their first game in 48 days. New York had won 13 straight games prior to their Game 3 loss and looked to be on one of the most historic postseason runs we've ever seen.

This was still just New York's third loss of the postseason and all three losses have been by 4 points or less.

In Game 4, the Knicks scored 111 points, shot 46% from the field and 35% from the perimeter. New York won the battle on the glass, out rebounding the Spurs 46 to 37 and 12 to 6 on the offensive glass. The Knicks scored 21 second chance points and narrowly won the battle in the paint (46-44).

Despite dominating the glass, 13 costly turnovers by the Knicks would result in 21 points the other way. Knicks' Captain Jalen Brunson had his best game of the series, scoring 32 points on 44% from the field.

The problem for Brunson has been his efficiency and when that happens his lack of facilitating becomes a huge issue. Brunson's shooting 37% from the field in this series and he's got just 13 total assists through three games. Brunson's also turned the ball over 13 times through three games.

As good as Brunson's been in the postseason, he needs to find a way to involve his teammates.

OG Anunoby is the Knicks second leading scorer in the postseason and he's taking just 11 shot attempts per game. He's averaging 19.9 points per game and he's been incredibly efficient; shooting 57% from the field and 47% from outside.

Through three games in this series, Karl-Anthony Towns has scored 50 total points; all 50 have come in the first three quarters of the game. Prior to Game 3, Towns had taken just two shots in the fourth quarter.

The Captain needs to do a better job of leading his squad.

One is good, Two is better

The San Antonio Spurs finally figured out how to close out a game and it broke the hearts of Knick fans everywhere. The Spurs scored 58 of their 115 points in the second half and recorded their highest scoring output of the NBA Finals so far.

Lead by Victor Wembanyama's 32 points, the Spurs managed to snag a game on the road and their young core showed no signs of letting up. Stephon Castle scored 23 points, shot 57% from the field and added in 5 rebounds and 5 assists.

Not only was Castle fantastic on the offensive end, but he's been San Antonio's primary defender on Brunson. Castle's guarded Brunson on 67 possessions so far through three games and his true shooting percentage drops to 40% when guarded by Castle.

For comparison, Brunson's got a 65% true shooting percentage in the postseason and he's averaging 27.7 points per 75 possessions. Against Castle, that drops to 15.7 points per 75 possessions; while his turnovers/75 nearly triples (6.7 per 75 possessions).

Brunson is shooting below 40% from the field in this series and it's not by accident.

Lastly, the Alien has landed. Wemby's averaging 29.0 points per game in this series and after back to back poor shooting nights; he came alive in Game 3. Victor scored 32 points, shot 61% from the field and finally saw a majority of his shots come close to the rim.

The Spurs have a +18.8 net rating difference with Wemby on the floor versus him off the floor. The 'non-Wemby' minutes have killed the Spurs and it's exactly when New York's been at their best.

Mitch Johnson did a great job of navigating those minutes in Game 3 and he'll need to do more of the same in Game 4 if San Antonio hopes to tie this series up tonight.

Game 4  Best Bets

Wembanyama

Victor Wembanyama o27.5 Points (-105) | Lucky Rebel

Like I said above, Wemby has been spectacular in his first NBA Finals. The kid is averaging 29.0 points per game, he's shooting 47% from the field and 3.3 blocks per game. The 22-year old is seeing a 31.6% usage rate in his first NBA Finals and he's answered the call.

After back to back losses, Wembanyama came to play. It feels like that two day rest period between Game 2 and Game 3 was something he really needed.

Victor went 2/9 from the perimeter in Game 1, 2/6 in Game 2 and then shot just 2/4 in Game 3. Wemby got his legs back and once again took over the paint. Thirteen of his 18 shot attempts came in the painted area, he got to the line for 9 free throw attempts and he shot 61% from the field.

Wemby's at his best when he's able to set up down low and we saw the Spurs get back to that in Game 3. Looking back on Games 1 and 2, it looks like Wembanyama settled for jumpers and it looked like he made a concerted effort to not do that in Game 3.

If the Spurs are going to tie this series up, it's going to be on the back of their 7'4 center.
