Analysis & Breakdown

The Captain
Jalen Brunson is the New York Knicks. Despite big performances from a few different Knicks' players, Brunson stands out because of what he continues to do in fourth quarters this postseason. The Knicks' Captain scored 13 of his 30 points in the 4th quarter, shot 56% from the field and once again closed out the game for New York.
Brunson's been incredible, averaging just under 10 points per game in the 4th quarter this postseason, shooting 60% from the field and even 60% from beyond the arc. He's just been so good.
O.G. Anunoby scored 17 points in Game 1, 12 of which came in that fourth quarter. Karl-Anthony Towns showed no fear attacking Wembanyama, scoring 18 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and shooting just under 50% from the field.
On the glass, it was Josh Hart that lead both teams with 15 rebounds. Hart played just 27 minutes but his impact can't be understated. Hart lead the game in both rebounds and assists, despite playing the fewest minutes of all 10 starters. He was a +22 in his 27 minutes and like I said, he was everywhere.
Defensively, the Knicks were great. They gave up 55 points in the first half, but locked in and held the Spurs to just 40 second half points; 17 of which came from Victor himself. The Knicks held San Antonio to 36% shooting from the field and an ugly 26% from beyond the arc.
The Knicks defense has been elite in the postseason and in Game 1, it was no different.
The Alien
The Spurs we watched in the first half of Game 1, did not look like the same team that came out in the second half. Despite shooting 40% in the first half, the Spurs went into the locker room with a 7-point lead. Wemby went 2/8 in the first half, but the Spurs shooting 38% from beyond the arc helped maintain their lead.
Everything flipped in the second half. Victor scored 17 of his 26 points in the second half, but the team shot just 32% from the field and 11% from the perimeter. Julian Champagnie went 5/6 from three in the first half, only to go 0/4 after the break.
Wemby scored 17 points but went 4/13 from the field and finished the night shooting 29% from the field. De'Aaron Fox fell completely flat in Game 1. He scored 7 points, shot 23% from the field and was held scoreless in the fourth quarter.
Dylan Harper was huge in Game 1. The rookie scored 16 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and shot 60% from the field. Unfortunately, Head Coach Mitch Johnson went to Fox in the fourth and Harper played just 4 minutes down the stretch of that ugly collapse.
You can blame the lineups, but the Spurs just have to be better.
The team needs to hit open shots, they need to limit their turnovers and Wembanyama cannot shoot under 30%.
The Spurs had 13 turnovers in Game 1 and that resulted in 19 points the other way for the Knicks. The Spurs had 14 wide open 3-point attempts in Game 1, they went 3/14. For contrast, the Knicks went 8/19 on their wide open attempts.
San Antonio needs to be better and that starts at the top with Vic.
Friday's Best Bets

Julian Champagnie o16.5 P/R (-110) | Lucky Rebel
We're going right bak to Champagnie tonight. He's been great this year and the Spurs can't win this series without his 3-point shooting. Champagnie went 5/10 in Game 1, but all 5 makes came in the first half. It got ugly after the break and it looked like San Antonio just collectively lost their legs.
Champagnie leads the Spurs in 3s made during the postseason, he's shooting 40% from beyond the arc and nearly 80% of his shot attempts are coming from outside. New York is the significantly better 3-point shooting team in this series and Champagnie is San Antonio's best chance of trying to match.
Champagnie also grabbed 10 rebounds in Game 1, 3 coming on the offensive glass. He spent a ton of time matched up with Brunson and it allowed for more scoring opportunities as well as more chances on the offensive glass. Look for more of the same tonight.

OG Anunoby 19.5 P/R (-110) | Lucky Rebel
Let's close it out with OG. Anunoby's been great in the postseason for the Knicks and he's the only player in both starting lineups to ever play in the NBA Finals prior to this year. He scored 17 points in Game 1, 12 in the fourth quarter and he hit two big time threes in that final frame.
Anunoby had just 3 rebounds in Game 1 but he's averaging 6.1 rebounds per game in his last 10 and he's cleared this line in 11 of his 13 playoff games. He's the Knicks second leading scorer in the postseason, averaging 19.5 points per game and shooting 48% from beyond the arc.
He's been incredible and today we're rolling with (the) OG.
