The UFC is taking the action back to the Apex tonight for a rather lack luster card at UFC Vegas 121. The headlining bout is the one making the most waves as Raul Rosas Jr will take on the veteran Raoni Barcelos Jr.

The surging fighters are putting rankings and win streaks on the line with Rosas Jr looking to prove he belongs. The bout will mark the first time Rosas Jr will feature in a Main Event, a long time coming for the hype behind Rosas Jr since his debut.

The Co – Main event is a true bad blood match up between Ailin Perez and Norma Dumont. Both have been trash talking and had to be held back from each other during several instances this week.

Even with no star power and lack luster match ups, die hard UFC fans will be tuning in to another night of fights. Including me, if there are fights on I am 100% going to bet on them.

Main Event: Raul Rosas Jr vs Raoni Barcelos Preview – Bantamweight

The Main Event of UFC Vegas 121 is set to kick off in a little over 5 hours now. Talented prospect Raul Rosas Jr will have his first headlining opportunity at just 21 years old when he takes on Raoni Barcelos.

Barcelos is over 18 years his elder, one of the biggest age gaps in a bout in UFC history. The match up is truly a textbook prospect vs seasoned veteran, a big test for Rosas Jr who has title aspirations.

Unfortunately for Rosas, Barcelos is not an easy night out for any level of prospect. Barcelos has multiple wins over surging prospects, even in just his last 5 fights.

Knocking off some talented prospects like Payton Talbott, Montel Jackson, & Ricky Simon. The 39 year old Barcelos has not let his age get in the way of things, now on an impressive 5 fight winning streak.

An even more rare feat when considering this is bantamweight, where aging fighters never last long due to the speed of the weight class. There is a reason he has found success this late in his career, it is his high level grappling skills.

A decorated wrestler and black belt in BJJ, Barcelos has used takedowns & control time to also open up his striking game. He has drowned some of these aforementioned prospects over the course of 3 rounds.

Due to the control time Barcelos has came out on top of some really close split decisions. The cardio is never really to much of an issue for Barcelos often winning the 3rd round of his bouts.

This is a whole different game though, as this bout is scheduled for 5 rounds. Many Fans are questioning if Barcelos can go a full 5 rounds considering his age and a tough weight cut.

Raul Rosas Jr may be getting a little bit of luck here taking on Barcelos at the perfect time in his career. The 5 round aspect certainly raises more questions on the Rosas Jr side though.

Will Rosas Jr Take Advantage Of The Headlining Opportunity?

In multiple fights now, Rosas Jr has gassed out in the second round and struggled his way thru the 3rd round. Early on his career, this hole was specifically exploited by another veteran in Christian Rodriguez who handed Rosas Jr his first loss.

Rosas Jr looked great early in the fight, dominating the first round. Once the fighters got off the stool in the 2nd, all momentum swung to Rodriguez who was much more fresh and able to stuff all the grappling attempts from Rosas Jr.

I believe even in the early rounds of this bout with Barcelos, Rosas Jr could struggle grappling due to the high level of his opponent. Barcelos has all the tools to stuff takedowns and even get some grappling of his own going early on in the fight which presents a big obstacle for the prospect.

In order to find success here Rosas Jr will absolutely have to show off his cardio and improved striking. If Rosas can hang around early, the success in the grappling will come later in the fight.

At some point Father time will come knocking at Barcelos door, and that may be in the later rounds of this bout. This is a massive opportunity for Rosas Jr to make a statement on the biggest stage of his career.

Due to the push from the UFC and star power Rosas Jr has quickly garnered, I believe he will rise to the occasion tonight. I expect Rosas Jr to use all aspects of MMA to take out the veteran, likely in the later rounds of this bout.
