NL Cy Young Award Leans
As the odds may suggest, it appears to be a wrap. As of June 17, 2025, the NL Cy Young Award looks destined for Pirates star Paul Skenes. Wrong. Despite what the market is telling us, this race is much closer than it appears. I placed a small wager on Zack Wheeler at 12/1 last week, and I not only believe the odds are off, but that this race will become far more competitive in the coming weeks.
Yes, Paul Skenes has been tremendous, and voters seem eager to hand him the award today. I still believe he has a lot more to prove. As of today, both Skenes and Wheeler have 11 quality starts, tied for the most in baseball alongside five other arms. Skenes owns a 4-6 record, with a 1.78 ERA (2nd), 0.85 WHIP (2nd), and 97 strikeouts (10th).
Wheeler, on the other hand, has started June on fire—1.50 ERA and 16 strikeouts through 12 innings pitched. He carries a 7-2 record, 2.76 ERA (16th), 0.89 WHIP (3rd), and 110 strikeouts (4th). If he can trim that ERA and continue to be one of the most consistent pitchers in baseball, this race is closer than most think.
This is tremendous value—Mr. Consistent at 10/1 in mid-June. There is still a ton of baseball left. If you are looking for value, Wheeler is your guy.
