New York Sports Betting Hits $214M Revenue Record

industry

New York sports betting delivered a record revenue month in July 2026. The state's eight licensed sportsbooks generated more than $214 million in gross gaming revenue. The result came despite a significant decline in betting volume from June.

The latest figures show how sportsbook hold can dramatically influence monthly revenue. They also highlight the impact of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on New York gambling. Meanwhile, the state collected more than $109 million in taxes from mobile sports betting.

New York Sportsbooks Set July Revenue Record

New York sportsbooks accepted approximately $1.88 billion in wagers during July. They generated $214.4 million in gross gaming revenue during the month. Some reports place the final revenue figure slightly higher at $214.7 million.

July marked the first time New York sportsbooks exceeded $200 million in revenue during the month. Mobile sports betting launched in the state in January 2022. The July result therefore established a new monthly record for that period.

The figures also show a sharp reversal from June. New York sportsbooks handled a record $2.25 billion in June wagers. However, they generated only $116.8 million in revenue during that month.

July handle consequently fell by about 16.7%, or roughly $376 million, from June. Revenue moved in the opposite direction, climbing about 83.5% month over month.

The market also performed strongly compared with July 2025. This year's $1.88 billion handle represented a 34% increase from the $1.40 billion recorded last July.

The strong results benefited several operators across the market. DraftKings led July handle with approximately $661.5 million in wagers. It generated about $72.9 million in revenue from that activity.

FanDuel recorded slightly less handle at $651.2 million. However, its 13.2% hold produced approximately $86.1 million in revenue. That gave FanDuel the strongest revenue performance among New York's operators.

For comparison, Fanatics generated $21.1 million from $221.6 million in wagers. Its revenue increased by 129% from June.

The performance also strengthened New York's tax collections. The state applies a 51% tax rate to mobile sports betting revenue. July therefore generated approximately $109.5 million in state taxes.

That figure nearly doubled June's $59.6 million tax contribution. Most of the state's sports betting tax revenue supports education. Other allocations support youth sports and responsible gambling programs.

Higher Hold Drives the Revenue Surge

The most important factor behind July's record was the sportsbooks' higher hold. Hold represents the percentage of wagers operators retain after paying winning bets.

New York sportsbooks posted an 11.42% hold in July. That figure more than doubled June's 5.19% hold.

The difference explains why revenue surged while betting volume declined. Sportsbooks retained more money from every dollar wagered in July. As a result, they generated substantially more revenue from a smaller handle.

June had produced an unusual result for operators. Bettors wagered a record amount during the month, but sportsbook margins fell sharply. July then delivered almost the exact opposite outcome.

The July hold also returned closer to levels seen earlier this year. New York sportsbooks maintained holds above 8% from January through May. June's 5.19% figure represented a significant departure from that pattern.

For US online sportsbooks, the figures demonstrate the importance of betting outcomes alongside wagering volume. A larger handle does not always translate into higher operator revenue. Stronger results for the house can produce much larger returns from fewer wagers.

World Cup Betting Boosts New York Sportsbooks

The 2026 FIFA World Cup played an important role in New York's July performance. The tournament sustained betting activity during a traditionally quieter month.

July normally lacks the NFL, NBA and NHL seasons. Major League Baseball therefore carries much of the domestic sports betting activity. The World Cup added a major international event to the calendar.

New York sportsbooks handled 34.3% more wagers in July 2026 than in July 2025. June and July combined produced approximately $4.1 billion in wagers.

The tournament also produced results that favored sportsbooks during its later stages. Three-way moneyline markets contributed to stronger operator margins. Spain's victory over Argentina in the final further benefited sportsbooks.

The contrast with June proved especially important. World Cup group-stage results helped bettors during that month. The knockout rounds instead produced stronger outcomes for operators.

As a result, July became an unusually strong month for New York gambling. Sportsbooks combined healthy betting demand with a much stronger hold.

New York now enters the next phase of the year with football season approaching. The NFL typically drives substantially higher betting volumes across the US market.

July's results show that major international events can also reshape sportsbook revenue during quieter periods.
