Iowa Sports Betting Handle Hits $185.5M in August 2026

The Iowa sports betting market maintained its momentum in August 2026, despite weaker operator revenue. According to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission report, $185.5 million in sports betting handle for the month.

The figure represented a 2.1% increase from August 2025. It also marked a 1.4% improvement from July's $182.9 million handle. It showed that Iowa bettors continued to wager heavily before football season reached its busiest stretch.

Iowa Sports Betting Handle Climbs in August

The $185.5 million handle translated into roughly $4 million more wagering activity than August 2025. However, the growth remained modest compared with Iowa's strongest betting months.

Iowa gambling activity typically follows the sporting calendar. Betting volumes often rise substantially when the NFL and college football seasons become more prominent. In contrast, August usually falls before those schedules reach their busiest periods.

Iowa's market therefore entered September with a solid foundation. The August handle also continued the state's broader pattern of strong mobile betting activity.

Sports Betting Revenue Falls 22.4%

While wagering increased, sportsbooks experienced a considerably weaker month on the revenue side. Iowa operators generated approximately $17.1 million in sports betting revenue during August.

That figure dropped 22.4% from the same month last year. Consequently, operators retained less revenue despite handling more bets.

The decline highlights the difference between handle and revenue. Handle measures the total amount wagered, while revenue reflects what sportsbooks retained after paying winning bets.

August's results therefore point to a more favorable month for bettors. A lower sportsbook hold reduced the amount operators kept from the money wagered.

Online Betting Remains the Market's Core

Mobile wagering continued to account for most of Iowa's sports betting activity. The state has 10 licensed entities offering online sports betting, according to the commission's August report.

That structure gives Iowa bettors broad access to mobile wagering throughout the state. It also keeps the market closely aligned with broader US online sportsbooks trends, where mobile betting represents most wagering activity.

The state eliminated its in-person registration requirement in January 2021. Since then, bettors have been able to register remotely and place wagers through mobile devices.

Tax Collections Also Decline

The weaker sportsbook revenue also affected Iowa's tax collections. The state collected approximately $1.15 million in sports wagering taxes during August.

That represented a 22.1% decline from August 2025. Thus, the state saw lower tax receipts even as the overall betting handle increased.

The result underscores the importance of sportsbook hold to Iowa's tax performance. Higher wagering volume does not automatically produce higher tax revenue when operator revenue falls.

Football Season Could Lift Future Handles

August's figures also provide an important baseline before Iowa enters its busiest betting period. Football typically drives substantial wagering across the state during the fall.

Iowa recorded monthly handles above $320 million in October and November 2025. Those results demonstrate the potential for much stronger activity once NFL and college football games gain momentum.

Therefore, September and the following months could produce a significant increase in wagering volume. However, the August results show that demand remained healthy before the football-driven surge.

Overall, Iowa's August performance delivered mixed results. The $185.5 million handle confirmed continued betting demand, but revenue fell sharply from the previous year.

With football season underway, sportsbooks now have an opportunity to build on August's stable wagering base.
