Massachusetts sports betting revenue rebounded in September 2026, with sportsbooks recording a 34% year-over-year increase. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) reported $772.92 million in total wagers and $71.19 million in taxable sports wagering revenue.
The MGC's monthly report showed that online betting continued to dominate the state's market. Mobile operators accounted for more than 99% of the total handle, highlighting their importance to Massachusetts gambling.
September's recovery followed weaker year-over-year results in August. Meanwhile, DraftKings and FanDuel maintained their leading positions among the state's online sportsbooks.
Massachusetts Sports Betting Handle Tops $772 Million
According to the MGC's September 2026 revenue report, bettors wagered approximately $772.92 million across online and retail sportsbooks. Online operators generated $765.99 million of that amount, while retail locations contributed $6.92 million.
Online betting therefore accounted for approximately 99.1% of the statewide handle. This gap highlights how strongly Massachusetts bettors favor mobile wagering over in-person betting.
However, handle and taxable revenue measure different aspects of sportsbook performance. Handle represents the total amount wagered, while taxable revenue reflects operators' adjusted receipts under state reporting rules.
The state recorded $71.19 million in taxable sports wagering revenue for September. Online sportsbooks generated $70.86 million, leaving retail operators with approximately $325,816.
The figures also produced an overall revenue hold of approximately 9.21%. This represents taxable wagering revenue as a share of total wagers, rather than the percentage of bets that operators ultimately retain after every accounting adjustment.
DraftKings and FanDuel Drive Revenue Growth
DraftKings and FanDuel led the online market as revenue recovered in September. According to reports, DraftKings generated approximately $34 million in revenue, while FanDuel recorded $22 million.
DraftKings captured around 47% of online sportsbook revenue, compared with FanDuel's 31%. Together, the operators accounted for approximately 78% of the market's online revenue.
Other licensed operators included BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, Fanatics, Bally Bet, and theScore Bet. However, their combined performance remained well behind the two market leaders.
These results reinforce the competitive gap between the largest brands and other US online sportsbooks operating in Massachusetts.
September Rebound Reverses August's Decline
September's year-over-year revenue increase followed several months of fluctuating results. Poker Industry PRO reported that Massachusetts sportsbook revenue declined 15% annually in August, following a 37% increase in July and a 12% drop in June.
The latest figures therefore mark a notable recovery from August's weaker performance. However, the swings also demonstrate how monthly sportsbook revenue can change sharply with betting outcomes and operator hold percentages.
Handle does not necessarily follow the same pattern as revenue. Sportsbooks can attract similar wagering volumes across different months while recording substantially different results. Payouts and the distribution of winning bets can influence the amount operators retain.
The market's cumulative activity also remains significant. Gaming Intelligence reported that Massachusetts online sports betting handle approached $6 billion during the first nine months of 2026. This milestone highlights the scale of mobile wagering across the state.
Sports Betting Taxes Contribute to State Revenue
The MGC's monthly report also highlights sports betting's contribution to state finances. Massachusetts collected approximately $14.22 million in sports wagering taxes during September, based on the reported taxable revenue.
Online sports wagering licensees face a 20% tax rate, while retail sportsbook operators pay 15%. The state distributes sports wagering tax revenue among designated funds, including the General Fund, Gaming Local Aid Fund, and Public Health Trust Fund.
Sports betting also formed a substantial part of Massachusetts' broader gambling market during September. The MGC reported $82.69 million in casino gross gaming revenue alongside $71.19 million in taxable sports wagering revenue.
Combined, these activities generated approximately $153.88 million in taxable gaming revenue. However, casino revenue and sports wagering revenue represent separate segments and should remain distinct when assessing sportsbook performance.
September's results show that Massachusetts sports betting revenue recovered despite recent monthly volatility. With online wagering dominating the market, DraftKings and FanDuel remain central to its performance as the state approaches $6 billion in year-to-date online handle.
