The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) has launched its Bet on Respect initiative to combat harassment linked to sports betting. The campaign targets bettors who direct threats, intimidation, or abuse toward athletes and sports officials.

The initiative arrives as sports wagering continues expanding across regulated US markets. Massachusetts regulators want bettors to understand that wagering never justifies abusive behavior toward players.

The MGC announced the initiative on August 31, introducing a new process for reporting suspected athlete harassment. The program gives athletes and sports organizations a direct channel to bring incidents before state regulators.

What Is Massachusetts' Bet on Respect Initiative?

Bet on Respect aims to promote responsible behavior among sports bettors while protecting athletes from wagering-related abuse. The initiative focuses on conduct that crosses the line from ordinary sports fandom into harassment.

The campaign has attracted support from major Massachusetts sports teams and sports betting operators. The Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins, and New England Patriots are among the professional sports organizations supporting the effort.

Major sportsbook operators are also backing the initiative. DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, and Fanatics Sportsbook have joined the campaign.

Massachusetts Gaming Commission Chair Jordan Maynard stressed the distinction between passionate fandom and harassment when announcing the initiative.

"Good-natured cheering and jeering are acceptable and even expected at sporting events, but sports wagering is an activity for adults, and adults should know better than to cross the line into harassment," said Jordan Maynard, Massachusetts Gaming Commission Chair. 

"Athletes, officials, and others associated with games being wagered on deserve to be free of intimidation during and surrounding competition. While this tool will be impactful, we hope its use will be limited as patrons will know right from wrong."

The initiative does not attempt to eliminate passionate sports fandom. Instead, it focuses on behavior that threatens or intimidates people involved in games.

How Massachusetts Will Address Athlete Harassment

The MGC has created a reporting portal for incidents involving betting-related athlete harassment. Athletes, leagues, players' associations, college athletic programs, venues, and other representatives can submit reports.

Regulators can then investigate reported incidents and determine whether further action is appropriate. In serious cases, Massachusetts can use its involuntary exclusion process against individuals who engage in prohibited conduct.

That measure could carry significant consequences for bettors. An individual placed on the state's exclusion list could lose access to regulated casinos and US online sportsbooks operating in Massachusetts.

The MGC's response also includes a responsible gambling component. Banned individuals can be directed toward problem gambling resources rather than simply being excluded from gambling facilities.

This approach recognizes that serious gambling-related misconduct can sometimes coincide with gambling problems or financial distress. The initiative therefore combines enforcement with resources intended to help people address harmful gambling behavior.

How Bet on Respect Builds on Existing Industry Programs

Massachusetts is not the first market to pursue stronger action against abusive bettors. Several sportsbook operators have already introduced measures targeting customers who harass athletes.

Fanatics Sportsbook, for example, launched its Bad Actor Program to identify and address abusive behavior. The program uses monitoring technology to help identify customers who engage in harassment or threatening conduct.

Customers identified through such programs can face sportsbook-level consequences. Those measures can include account suspensions or permanent bans from an operator's platform.

Bet on Respect takes a broader regulatory approach. Rather than relying solely on individual operators, Massachusetts can potentially use its regulatory authority to exclude serious offenders from legal gambling facilities statewide.

This creates an important distinction between an operator ban and a regulatory exclusion. A bettor could potentially lose access to multiple regulated gambling options instead of one sportsbook account.

Why Athlete Harassment Has Become a Bigger Concern

Sports betting has increased the financial connection some fans feel toward individual players. Player props and parlays can make bettors closely follow specific performances and outcomes.

NCAA data illustrates the scale of the problem among college athletes. The organization found that 51% of Division I men's basketball players experienced online abuse tied to their athletic performance.

Among those players, 46% of the reported abuse was directly connected to gambling. The figures highlight how wagering can contribute to hostile online interactions involving athletes.

When those wagers lose, some bettors direct their frustration toward athletes. Reports of abusive messages and threats have raised concerns among professional and college sports organizations.

The problem also extends beyond social media. Athletes can encounter bettors at sporting events or receive unwanted contact after games.

Consequently, regulators and sports organizations have increasingly called for stronger protections. Bet on Respect adds Massachusetts to that broader effort while giving athletes and sports groups a formal reporting channel.

What the Initiative Means for Massachusetts Bettors

Massachusetts bettors can continue cheering, criticizing performances, and supporting their teams. The campaign instead warns against threats, intimidation, and targeted harassment connected to wagers.

The MGC's approach also reinforces a broader responsible gambling message. Bettors should treat sports wagering as entertainment rather than a reason to confront athletes over individual results.

The combination of enforcement and support resources also gives the initiative a wider responsible gambling focus. Regulators can address harmful conduct while connecting affected individuals with assistance.

The initiative could also influence how other regulated markets address similar conduct. If Massachusetts successfully combines reporting, regulatory enforcement, and responsible gambling support, other jurisdictions may consider comparable measures.
