Jim Townsend Named New Michigan Gaming Control Board Chair

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has appointed Jim Townsend as the new chairman of the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB), effective August 1, 2026.

Townsend succeeds Jim Ananich, who has served as board chair since April 2025. His appointment remains subject to confirmation by the Michigan Senate and runs through December 31, 2028. Meanwhile, he will serve as chairman at the governor's pleasure.

The leadership change arrives as Michigan gambling continues to evolve. The state remains one of the nation's largest regulated markets for US online casinos and US online sportsbooks, while regulators maintain a strong focus on consumer protection and enforcement against illegal operators.

Jim Townsend to Lead the MGCB

Townsend will officially assume the chairmanship on August 1 and is expected to preside over his first public MGCB meeting on August 4 in Detroit.

He replaces Jim Ananich, who announced he would step down at the end of July after serving as board chair since April 2025. During his tenure, the MGCB continued strengthening oversight of Michigan's online gaming market while expanding enforcement efforts against unlicensed gambling operators.

The five-member board oversees Detroit's three commercial casinos, online casino gaming, sports betting, fantasy contests, charitable gaming, and other regulated gambling activities across the state.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer said Townsend's experience made him well suited to lead the board through its next chapter. She noted his background in public service, law, and economic development would help the MGCB continue protecting consumers while supporting a fair gaming industry.

MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams also welcomed the appointment and expressed confidence in Townsend's leadership.

"Jim Townsend is a proven leader whose legal, legislative, and economic development experience make him exceptionally well-suited to lead the Board," Williams said. "I look forward to working alongside him as the Board carries out its critical mission on behalf of Michigan residents."
