The Illinois Gaming Board sent cease-and-desist letters to 65 sweepstakes casino operators. Regulators allege these platforms offered illegal gambling services to state residents. According to the Board, the sites operated without proper licensing or regulatory approval.

Many sweepstakes platforms mimic the experience of US online casinos. However, they often rely on promotional models to avoid gambling regulations. Illinois Gaming Board Chair Charles Schmadeke echoed those concerns. He stated the Board must protect the integrity of regulated gaming. 

"Our laws exist to ensure transparency and consumer protection," Schmadeke said. He added that unlicensed sweepstakes casino operators undermine those safeguards.

The letters required operators to immediately stop offering games to Illinois residents. They also warned against continued advertising within the state. Several well-known sweepstakes brands reportedly received notices. Regulators said enforcement would continue if operators fail to comply.

Illinois joins a growing list of states targeting sweepstakes-style gaming. Lawmakers increasingly view these platforms as illegal substitutes for regulated gambling. The crackdown reflects broader concerns about consumer harm and lost tax revenue.
