iGaming Ontario (iGO) has launched BetGuard, a centralized self-exclusion platform for regulated online gambling.
The system strengthens responsible gambling tools across Canada online casinos and Ontario gambling markets. Officials confirmed a full rollout is scheduled for May 2026.
The initiative marks a major upgrade in how Ontario manages player protection tools. It also reflects rising demand for unified safeguards in digital betting environments.
What is the BetGuard Self-Exclusion Platform?
BetGuard is a province-wide self-exclusion system built for Ontario's regulated iGaming market. It allows players to block access to all licensed operators with a single registration. Previously, users had to opt out individually from each gambling site.
Now, one exclusion request applies across all regulated Canada online casinos. Players can choose exclusion periods such as six months, one year, or five years. The system ensures consistent enforcement across all licensed platforms in Ontario gambling.
iGaming Ontario developed BetGuard with technology partners IC360 and IXUP. These partners support identity verification, data security, and compliance integration. Together, they help ensure accurate enforcement and privacy protection for users.
BetGuard's Key Protections
BetGuard introduces several important safeguards for responsible gambling.
First, it blocks access across all regulated operators in Ontario simultaneously.
Second, it prevents excluded users from creating new accounts using the same identity. This reduces previous loopholes in fragmented self-exclusion systems.
Third, it ensures uniform compliance across Canada online casinos operating in Ontario. Operators must integrate the system into their platforms to maintain licensing.
Finally, it strengthens coordination between regulators and licensed gambling operators. This improves the reliability of self-exclusion enforcement across the province.
Ontario Strengthens its iGaming Regulation Framework
Ontario continues to expand its regulated online gambling market under strict oversight. The province launched its open iGaming model in 2022 through iGaming Ontario. Since then, Ontario gambling has become one of North America's most active markets.
However, regulators continue to prioritize harm prevention alongside market growth. BetGuard represents the latest step in that broader responsible gambling strategy.
iGaming Ontario President and CEO Joseph Hillier emphasized the system's importance. He said the initiative ensures "all responsible gambling tools offered to players and operators are made available."
Hillier added that centralized exclusion tools form a cornerstone of Ontario's protection framework.
Additionally, the Responsible Gambling Council also highlighted the importance of unified systems. Advocates note that fragmented exclusions reduce effectiveness and create unnecessary risk. They argue that centralized systems improve accessibility and long-term player safety.
The initiative operates under the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) framework. AGCO rules require all licensed operators to integrate BetGuard into their platforms. This ensures full coverage across all Canada online casinos in the province.
Ontario positions BetGuard as a leading model for regulated iGaming markets. The system highlights how technology can strengthen responsible gambling protections at scale.
