Why are Lawmakers Pushing for Online Sports Betting Ad Ban?
Senator Kristopher Wells of Alberta recently joined a growing group of colleagues calling for immediate federal action. This group sent a formal letter to the Prime Minister's office on November 13, 2025.
They argue that gambling advertisements have become predatory and inescapable for Canadian families. Specifically, lawmakers want the federal government to use its regulatory power to clear these ads from television.
Their key concerns center on the sheer volume of marketing. Some reports indicate that gambling ads now occupy one-fifth of total broadcast time during major games. Senators argue that this saturation normalizes high-risk behavior for children.
Furthermore, they believe mobile technology has transformed every smartphone into a dangerous, pocket-sized casino.
Senator Marty Deacon has been a vocal critic of the current landscape. She noted that there has been a massive increase in sports betting ads since single-game betting became legal.
Senator Wells echoed this sentiment, noting that the ads are "impossible to avoid" during any live broadcast. They compare the current situation to the early days of tobacco marketing.
Consequently, they are calling for a "cigarette-style" ban to prioritize public health over corporate profits.
Opposition to the Federal Prohibition
However, not everyone agrees with a total federal ban. Some provincial leaders argue that heavy-handed regulations could yield negative results. Dale Nally, Alberta's Minister of Service Alberta, suggests that a ban might weaken the regulated market.
He warns that strict limits could push consumers toward "black market" websites. Such platforms offer no consumer protections and do not contribute tax revenue to the Canadian economy.
