Since Justify became the 13th horse to win the Triple Crown eight years ago, no horse has won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. That streak will continue into 2027, following the news that history-making Derby winner Golden Tempo will not race in the Preakness.
Golden Tempo to Miss Preakness, Return for Belmont Stakes
In a statement released today, trainer Cherie DeVaux revealed the decision to rest Golden Tempo for the Preakness, which will take place at Laurel Park on Saturday, May 16. Instead, the plan is for him to return for the Belmont Stakes on June 6.
At Churchill Downs, Golden Tempo, ridden by Jose Ortiz, came back from last place to defeat Renegade—ridden by Jose's brother Irad Jr.—by a neck. That stunning comeback made DeVaux the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby, and for a few days, there was hope that a potential Triple Crown attempt was in the works.
That will not happen, but if he does run at Saratoga next month, he will have a chance to become the 13th horse to win the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. Most recently, Sovereignty did it last year, becoming the first horse since Thunder Gulch in 1995 to win just those two races.
Even before today's news, Golden Tempo was not the Preakness Stakes favorite, according to Lucky Rebel, BetOnline, and other sites that offer odds for the Triple Crown races and other notable horse races. He sat second behind Bob Baffert-trained Crude Velocity, who won the Pat Day Mile at Churchill Downs on Derby Day.
With Golden Tempo out of the running, Crude Velocity is a firm favorite over Silent Tactic and Ocelli.
2026 Preakness Stakes Odds
Odds are from BetOnline as of Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
| Horse | Odds |
| Crude Velocity | +120 |
| Silent Tactic | +700 |
| Ocelli | +700 |
| Taj Mahal | +1000 |
| Iron Honor | +1000 |
| Chip Honcho | +1200 |
| Great White | +1400 |
| Napoleon Solo | +1400 |
| Express Kid | +2000 |
| Ottinho | +2800 |
| The Hell We Did | +2800 |
| Talkin | +2800 |
| Pretty Boy Miah | +3300 |
| Crupper | +3300 |
Silent Tactic scratched from the Derby due to a foot injury, while Ocelli scored a surprising third-place finish behind Golden Tempo and Renagade after taking Fulleffort's place in the field. As it stands, neither horse is confirmed to run at Laurel Park, which means Preakness Stakes odds could see even more significant changes prior to next week's race.
