Last night results saw us go 1-1 for a small profit of .31 Units thank to Sidney Crosby clearing his shot on goal mark in overtime. YTD sits at 5-2 for a profit of 4.24 Units.

As far as my NHL picks, I look at shot on goal props, but only plus money looks, as the market is very volatile with stat corrections (sometimes days after the game has ended). Also, I'm a totals bettor (team and game). I am never afraid at looking at plus money underdogs. I love providing my insight as to the "Why" and I hope to provide some guidance to novice bettors of this great sport. "Spot" betting is huge on the ice, and this depends on teams travel schedules, goaltending matchups and splits following a win/loss, among may others. It's Saturday Night and Saturday night is Hockey night. For my Saturday NHL Best Bets, I am eyeing up two games, the Columbus Blue Jackets against the St. Louis Blues and the Toronto Maple Leafs against the Colorado Avalanche.

Columbus Blue Jackets vs St. Louis Blues Predictions

Columbus Blue Jackets vs St. Louis Blues Goaltending Matchup

  • Columbus Blue Jackets (2-1) Jet Greaves (Projected) 1-1, 3.50 GAA/.877 Sv%)
  • St. Louis Blues (1-2-1) Joel Hofer (Projected) 1-1, 1.68 GAA/.930 Sv%)

Best Bet: St. Louis Blues Team Total Over 3.5 +130 Lucky Rebel

If you follow me on twitter you know I track a Back to Back NHL system. The parameters are simple, fade a team on a back to back following a win and tail a team on a back to back following a loss. That system is in play with multiple games on the card, including here. The Blue Jackets enter this contest following a 3-2 overtime win against the Pittsburgh Penguins. They now have to travel to St. Louis for one game before returning back home to meet the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night. This system turned a profit of almost 8 units last season and is 9-4 thus far this season for a profit of 3.80 Units.

You know I am a plus money bettor and look for value. So instead of laying the -130 money line on the Blues, I take them to score 4 goals, at a much nicer price of +130. Despite starting a bit slow, I am still high on this St. Louis offense. The Blues have only scored 9 goals in 4 games but I think they can break through tonight. St. Louis is looking for their first home win as they were defeated by the San Jose Sharks in their home opener. With Cam Talbot getting the nod last night, one would expect Jet Greaves to go tonight, who has struggled to start the season. The Jackets are still dealing with injuries on D and St. Louis should exploit that at home here.

Best Bet: Mason McTavish Over 2.5 SOG +130 Lucky Rebel

St. Louis traded 2 first round picks to Anaheim to acquire Center Mason McTavish in the offseason and he has gotten off to a fine start. Mason has 2 goals and 2 assists in the first 4 games of the season. McTavish has also hit his shot on goal prop in 3 of those 4 games as he's collected 13 shots on 20 attempts. Head to Head he has cleared this in 5 of 6 meetings, averaging 3.3 shots on 5.3 attempts. I like Mason to continue to produce as St. Louis looks for a win tonight.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Colorado Avalanche Predictions

Nathan MacKinnon is a power house at home, making his points a best bet

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Colorado Avalanche Goaltending Matchup

  • Toronto Maple Leafs (2-2-1) Sergei Bobrovsky (Projected) 0-2-1, 2.97 GAA/.906 Sv%
  • Colorado Avalanche (3-1) Mackenzie Blackwood (Projected) 2-1, 2.68 GAA/.895 Sv%

Best Bet: Toronto Maple Leafs vs Colorado Avalanche Over 6.5 -112 Lucky Rebel

All signs point to the over in this matchup. Colorado's offense has been absolutely lethal to start the season, racking up 23 goals over their four games. The new look Toronto Maple Leafs are more of the same as previous years. Toronto is coming off a 4-3 loss in Vegas where they blew a 3-0 lead. Their offense has looked better this season as Auston Mathews is fully healthy and the addition of Kirill Marchenko has added more explosiveness. They are still having issues defending however, which is not a good recipe when facing the Avalanche. I am fine with backing both of these offenses here, weather is it 3+3=7 or a 5-2 type score, the over is the play.
