It feels so good to write about the NBA. We’re just seven days from tip-off of the 2024/25 NBA Season and I’m locked in.
I’ve got a few futures placed and I’ll get into a few more in the days leading up to the season. Today we’re here to talk about the NBA’s biggest individual honour, the Most Valuable Player Award.
Last year we saw Jokic take home his third MVP in four seasons, averaging 26.4 points 12.4 rebounds and 9 assists per game. Denver finished 2nd in the Western Conference with 57 wins and Jokic was once again unstoppable.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Doncic would both finish as finalists for the award, but ultimately it would be Jokic taking home yet another Most Valuable Player Award.
With so many superstars in the NBA today, it’s tough to narrow the field to just one guy; with that being said, we’re going to discuss the 3 players I think have a real shot at winning it the MVP Award this year. Yikes, that’s a lot tickets, I know.
None of the guys I’m here to talk about are chalk, each one will return at least 8-1 if they win, and you can read all about why I bet it below. Let’s jump right into it.

Jayson Tatum (+1600) via BetOnline
Let’s just get this one out of the way, quick and easy. Roll those eyes back to the front and lock in with me.
When I initially bet Jayson Tatum to win MVP, it was August and the best odds available were (+2800). That line now sits at (+1300) on the same book, luckily for you, our friends over at BetOnline still have this available for (+1600).
Last year, Tatum averaged 26.9 points per game, 8.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists. The Celtics won 64 games and Tatum played in 74 of the team’s 82 games. He’s played in 74+ games in 5 of his 7 years in the league; 64+ games in all 7 years in the league.
JT’s 27 points per game were a step down from 30/game he averaged in 2022/23. With the additions of Porzingis and Jrue Holiday, Tatum’s average shots per game dropped to 19.3 field goal attempts per game.
With that, Tatum’s shooting percentage increased to 47.1% and his 3P % jumped from 35% the year prior, to 37.6% last year. Additionally, his 4.9 assists per game was a career high and we saw him elevate that to 6.3 per game in the post-season.
Kristaps Injury
The Celtics will be without one of their biggest additions of the last 10-ish years, Kristaps Porzingis until about late December, possibly January.
Porzingis has been vocal about being on track in his recovery, but even if KP’s able to play in December, it will take a little while before he’s seeing a full compliment of minutes. With KP missing time, that opens up more shots in the offense.
In the year prior, without Porzingis, Tatum averaged 30.1 points per game on 46.6% from the field; additionally he averaged 21 shots per game and was getting to the line for 8.4 free throw attempts per game.
The biggest knock on Tatum last year, was that he’s got too much help. With Porzingis out for a chunk of the year, it’ll be time for Tatum to shine just a little bit extra.
Revenge Tour
Lastly, I just want to remind everyone of JT’s benching during the Paris Olympic. I can assure you, he hasn’t forgotten.

Giannis Antetokounmpo (+850) via BetOnline
This is about as chalky as I’ll get with the MVP Award. Giannis Antetokounmpo at (+850) is the best available line and I just can’t pass it up. Giannis played in 73 games last year, averaged 30.4 points per game, 11.4 rebounds and 6.5 assists.
He’s 7′ tall, 250 pounds, and runs as fast as anyone. Last year he finished with 10 triple doubles, averaged 2.3 stocks per game, and the Bucks finished 3rd in the Eastern Conference.
All this, yet somehow it feels like no one was talking about Giannis last year. The entire narrative that followed this Milwaukee team last year was about Damian Lillard and his slump, then it was about the firing of Adrian Griffin and hiring of Doc Rivers.
Then, as the season’s coming to an end, Giannis gets hurt and misses the end of the regular season and the post-season. The Bucks would lose to the Pacers in just six games, with Damian Lillard playing just 4 of the 6 due to injury.
Franchise Player & Most Valuable Player
Milwaukee’s entire franchise has been built and shaped around Giannis Antetokounmpo and I don’t think they’ve got any regrets. Giannis and company brought a championship to Milwaukee during the 2020/21 NBA Season with Giannis claiming the Finals Most Valuable Player Award.
Antetokounmpo’s also brought home some solo hardware, winning back to back MVPs in 2019 and 2020; add to that his DPOY award and multiple 1st Team All-NBA and 1st Team All-Defense honours.
His resume is stacked and he’s only gotten better. When Giannis was the MVP in 2019 and 2020 he averaged under 30 points per game both years, and still hadn’t developed into the passer he’s now become.
Giannis averaged 6 assists per game last year and we saw that jump to 7 per game after the All-Star Break. He’s developed greatly as a passer and now with Damian Lillard and company, look for Giannis to be a constant threat to triple double.
Giannis Antetokounmpo (+850) via BetOnline
Stephen Curry (+5000) via BetOnline
There’s no long-winded explanation as to why we’re betting Steph Curry, it’s just Steph Curry. This is an absolute long shot, so adjust your unit size accordingly.
Last year, at the age of 36, Steph played in 74 games, averaged 26.4 points per game on 45% and 41% from beyond the arc. He did everything he could for the Warriors but they once again missed the post-season.
The Warriors just let Klay Thompson walk and didn’t make any big additions in the off-season.
Say what you want about Klay, but he averaged 18 points per game and was this Warriors’ team 2nd leading scorer. He shot 43% from the field but he was still shooting 39% from deep.
Golden State’s biggest signings this summer were De’Anthony Melton and Buddy Hield. It should be interesting to see Hield and Steph play together, being two of the top 4 players in 3-pointers made over the L10 seasons, but it’s still just Buddy Hield.
Even with the addition, this Warriors team is not built to win now so if Steph can will these guys to a 4th seed in the Western Conference, he’s got to be the MVP.
