Virginia Sports Betting Revenue Tops $55M in July 2026

industry

The Virginia sports betting market generated more than $55 million in revenue during July 2026.

Bettors wagered $609.16 million across Virginia's regulated sports betting market during the month. The figure represented a 41.9% increase from July 2025.

The latest results show continued momentum for Virginia gambling despite a softer sportsbook hold. The market also entered the second half of 2026 with substantial wagering activity.

According to the Virginia Lottery's July 2026 Sports Betting Report, operators generated $55.39 million in adjusted gross revenue. That figure climbed 21.5% from the $45.59 million reported during July 2025.

Virginia Sports Betting Handle Surpasses $609 Million

The state's $609.16 million handle marked a significant improvement from the previous year.

Virginia sportsbooks accepted $429.27 million in wagers during July 2025. Therefore, July 2026 added almost $180 million in betting volume year over year.

The market also grew from June's $589.19 million handle. That represented a month-over-month increase of about 3.4%.

Eleven mobile operators and three land-based casinos contributed to July's betting activity. The Virginia Lottery said the state's handle increased nearly 42% from the previous year.

As a result, Virginia remained one of the largest US online sportsbooks markets by betting volume. Old Dominion ranked the state second among the July markets it tracked, behind Ohio.

Revenue Grows Despite a Lower Sportsbook Hold

Revenue growth did not match the increase in wagering volume because sportsbooks recorded a lower hold.

Virginia's July hold reached 9.09%, compared with 10.62% in July 2025. The state's June hold was also slightly higher at 9.48%.

In practical terms, sportsbooks kept less of every dollar wagered than they did one year earlier. However, the substantial increase in betting volume more than offset the lower margin.

That dynamic helped Virginia generate $55.39 million in adjusted gross revenue. The result also placed Virginia among the stronger markets in RG.org's July comparison.

Online Betting Remains Central to Virginia Gambling

Online wagering continues to dominate Virginia's sports betting market.

Retail wagering represented only about 0.46% of Virginia's July handle. That figure leaves virtually all betting activity flowing through mobile channels.

The result highlights the importance of mobile platforms to Virginia's regulated market. It also shows why the state's online sportsbooks remain central to its overall betting performance.

Virginia's market launched online sports betting in January 2021. Since then, mobile wagering has become the primary channel for bettors across the state.

Virginia Collects More Than $8 Million in July Taxes

Additionally, the state's strong revenue performance also generated substantial tax proceeds.

Virginia collected $8.31 million in sports betting taxes during July. The state applies a 15% statutory tax rate to taxable adjusted gross revenue.

Of that amount, $8.10 million went to the General Fund. Another $207,627 went to the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund.

The latter allocation represents 2.5% of the state's sports betting tax collections. The Virginia Lottery confirmed that ten operators reported cumulative positive taxable adjusted gross revenue during July.

Virginia Enters Football Season With Strong Momentum

July's results give Virginia's sports betting market a strong platform heading into football season.

Football typically drives significant wagering activity across US online sportsbooks. Consequently, Virginia could see another substantial increase in handle once the NFL and NCAAF schedules take center stage.

The July numbers already demonstrate strong underlying demand. Bettors pushed the state's monthly handle above $600 million despite the seasonal lull.

Meanwhile, revenue exceeded $55 million even as sportsbook margins declined from last year's level.

Overall, Virginia's July results point to a market driven increasingly by betting volume. The state's online-heavy structure should remain particularly important as football wagering accelerates.

With more than $609 million wagered in July, Virginia gambling enters the second half of 2026 from a position of considerable strength.
