Nebraska's push to legalize online sports betting has gained fresh momentum ahead of a November ballot vote.
Major US online sportsbooks are putting more money behind the campaign to expand mobile wagering. Their latest contributions highlight the industry's interest in entering Nebraska's market.
DraftKings and FanDuel each contributed $3.5 million to Tax Relief Nebraska. Their combined $7 million contribution brought the campaign's total fundraising to about $14.65 million.
The latest funding arrives less than a month before Nebraska voters decide the future of online sports betting. The vote will take place on November 3, 2026.
Nebraska Online Sports Betting Prepares for Vote
Nebraska currently allows retail sports betting, but residents cannot place wagers through online sportsbooks. Two ballot initiatives could change that structure:
Initiative Measure 440: seeks to amend the Nebraska Constitution to authorize online sports betting.
Initiative Measure 441: aims to establish the statutory framework for regulating mobile wagering.
Voters will consider both measures during the November election. Approval would move Nebraska closer to launching a regulated online sports betting market.
Supporters argue that legalization could provide meaningful financial benefits for the state. The proposed system could generate about $60.9 million in property-tax relief over five years.
The framework could also allow up to 12 online sportsbooks to operate in Nebraska. That structure would give major operators an opportunity to establish a larger presence in the state.
For Nebraska gambling, the vote therefore represents a potentially significant expansion. It could shift much of the state's sports betting activity from retail locations to mobile platforms.
However, the proposed market would retain important wagering restrictions. Bettors would remain unable to wager on Nebraska college teams, such as the Cornhuskers, when they play in the state. College player prop bets would also remain prohibited.
Major Sportsbooks Increase Their Support
DraftKings and FanDuel have emerged as the largest financial backers of the online betting campaign.
Each operator previously contributed about $3.54 million before adding another $3.5 million. Their combined support now accounts for most of the campaign's fundraising.
BetMGM and Fanatics have also contributed to the effort, although their financial commitments remain considerably smaller.
The latest contributions also come as sportsbooks compete for access to emerging U.S. wagering markets. Nebraska could become another important state for operators if voters approve the measures.
Both DraftKings and FanDuel already offer prediction-market products in Nebraska. However, traditional online sportsbooks would remain unavailable unless voters approve the proposed expansion.
Nebraska Family Alliance Leads Opposition
The campaign faces opposition despite its strong financial backing from the sportsbook industry.
The Nebraska Family Alliance leads the opposition through its registered committee, Save Nebraska Sports. The group has raised concerns about expanding access to sports betting.
State Auditor Mike Foley, State Treasurer Joey Spellerberg, and former Husker coach Ron Brown have also joined Save Nebraska Sports. Their involvement has sharpened the opposition's challenge to supporters' property-tax relief claims.
Opponents have highlighted potential gambling-related harms and increased exposure to wagering. They have also questioned the amount of sports betting advertising that could follow legalization.
Some opponents argue that legalization could send gambling revenue to companies based outside Nebraska. Supporters instead emphasize consumer choice, regulation and potential property-tax benefits.
Meanwhile, the campaign continues spending heavily as election day approaches. Tax Relief Nebraska spent roughly $2.29 million during its latest reporting period, including about $1.71 million on advertising.
November Vote Could Reshape Nebraska's Market
The Nov. 3 vote will determine whether Nebraska takes its next step toward mobile sports betting. Approval would not immediately put every sportsbook online. Operators would still need to meet the state's regulatory requirements before launching.
However, a successful vote would give major operators access to a market that currently limits sports betting to retail locations.
For the US online sportsbooks sector, Nebraska therefore represents a potentially valuable new opportunity. The latest $7 million contribution shows how strongly major operators want that opportunity.
The campaign now enters its final stretch with substantial industry backing. Voters will ultimately determine whether Nebraska gambling expands into the online market.
