Nebraska voters will decide the future of online sports betting during the November 2026 general election. State officials have certified two petitions seeking to expand the state's wagering market.

The development marks a significant step for Nebraska gambling. Currently, Nebraska allows sports betting at licensed racetrack casinos. Bettors must still visit those properties to place wagers.

The proposed measures would change that system by allowing online sports wagering across the state. Consequently, Nebraska could join the growing number of states with regulated mobile betting markets.

Nebraska Petitions Clear Certification

The Nebraska Secretary of State certified both online sports betting measures after verifying their signature totals. The constitutional petition received at least 138,473 valid signatures.

That total exceeded the required threshold of 127,054 signatures. Meanwhile, the statutory petition secured 96,918 valid signatures, surpassing its 88,938-signature threshold.

One petition would amend the state constitution to authorize online sports wagering. The second would establish the regulatory framework for the proposed market.

Both initiatives will now appear on the November ballot.

Tax Relief Nebraska organized the petition campaign after previous legislative efforts failed. The campaign's success moves the decision from lawmakers to voters.

Jordan McGrain, a local political consultant working for Tax Relief Nebraska, discussed the development in a statement with the Nebraska Examiner.

"We are grateful to every Nebraskan who participated in the process and signed our petitions," McGrain said.

The campaign argues that online wagering could generate substantial economic benefits for Nebraska. It also believes legalization would keep betting activity within a regulated local market.

"We believe voters will agree that a legal and regulated online sports wagering marketplace will keep the money in Nebraska, generating new revenue for local communities and millions of dollars in property tax relief."

Proposed Market Could Expand Nebraska Online Sports Betting

If voters approve the measures, Nebraska would transition from a retail-focused market to a broader digital system. Licensed online operators would reportedly need partnerships with existing racetrack casinos.

The proposal would also establish limits for participating operators. For example, operators could run no more than two online platforms simultaneously.

Additionally, servers handling wagers would need to remain within Nebraska. These provisions would give regulators greater control over the state's digital betting market.

The proposed tax structure also forms a major part of the campaign's argument. Supporters estimate online sports betting could produce more than $30 million annually.

Crucially, 70% of the estimated tax revenue would go to the state's Property Tax Credit Cash Fund. The allocation makes property tax relief a central selling point for the campaign.

The remaining tax revenue would support other state priorities under the proposed framework. Therefore, supporters can point to both economic activity and direct tax relief when making their case.

College Sports Betting Would Face Restrictions

The proposed expansion would not allow unrestricted betting on college sports. In particular, wagering on Nebraska college teams would remain prohibited.

That means bettors could not wager on local teams such as the Nebraska Cornhuskers under the proposed framework. The restriction would provide an important safeguard for Nebraska's college sports programs.

The rule could also become a key talking point during the campaign. Nebraska has a strong college sports following, particularly around its football program.

FanDuel and DraftKings Back Campaign

The petition campaign has also received substantial financial support from major sportsbook companies. FanDuel and DraftKings each contributed approximately $3.5 million to the effort.

Their financial backing highlights the industry's interest in opening Nebraska to mobile wagering. A successful vote could create a new market for major US online sportsbooks.

The proposed expansion could also give Nebraska bettors greater access to legal wagering options. Customers would no longer need to travel to a racetrack casino to place sports bets.

Nevertheless, opponents continue to raise concerns about expanded gambling access. They argue that mobile wagering could make betting easier to access and increase problem gambling risks.

Regulations Could Arrive in 2027

Even if voters approve the measures, mobile sportsbooks would not launch immediately after the election. State regulators would first need to develop and implement the necessary rules.

Regulations are expected to be in place by June 2027 under the proposed framework. That timeline gives regulators several months to establish requirements for operators and bettors.

The delay would also give existing casinos and prospective sportsbook partners time to prepare. As a result, Nebraska's online market could take shape gradually after voter approval.

Signature Questions Surround Ballot Campaign

The petition process has also faced scrutiny amid allegations involving potentially fraudulent signatures. Nebraska officials have investigated concerns connected to statewide ballot initiatives.

Still, officials verified enough valid signatures for both sports betting measures. The constitutional petition cleared its threshold by more than 11,000 signatures.

The statutory petition also exceeded its requirement by nearly 8,000 signatures. Therefore, both measures will proceed to the November election.

Voters Will Decide Nebraska's Betting Future

The certification shifts the debate from the state legislature to Nebraska voters. If approved, the measures could fundamentally change how residents access sports betting.

The result could also reshape Nebraska's relationship with online gambling operators. Moreover, legalization could create a new source of tax revenue for local communities.

For now, supporters must convince voters that regulated mobile betting offers greater benefits than risks. The November election will ultimately determine whether Nebraska embraces online sports wagering.
