She met with the five elected Chiefs of the Wabanaki Nations this past fall. During these discussions, the Chiefs emphasized the profound economic impact of digital gaming. They argued that online platforms would provide essential funding for community programs.

Upon signing the bill, Governor Mills released a powerful statement regarding her decision. "This fall, I met with the five elected Chiefs of the Wabanaki Nations, who each spoke passionately about the importance of this bill in offering life-changing revenue for Tribal communities, as well as providing a form of economic sovereignty for their Nations."

What are LD 1164 Key Proponents?

The new law, LD 1164, establishes a clear framework for the industry. The bill allows for up to four distinct online platforms. Each of the four federally recognized tribes will control one license. 

Furthermore, the state will apply an 18 percent tax rate on all online casino revenue. Proponents estimate the state will collect $1.8 million during the first year of operation. This figure should rise to over $3 million annually in the following years.

Regulation will fall under the jurisdiction of both tribal and state gambling authorities. This structure aligns perfectly with the existing online sports betting model in the state. Currently, three tribes partner with Caesars, while one tribe works with DraftKings. 

The state expects these established partnerships to facilitate a smooth transition into the casino space.
