Alberta iGaming Market Enters Enforcement Phase

industry

The Alberta iGaming market is entering a new phase after the province's transition deadline passed on October 13, 2026. Regulators are now focused on enforcing market rules while protecting residents as the number of approved gambling platforms continues to grow.

The market has expanded rapidly since its launch on July 13, when 22 commercial sites began operating. By mid-October, Alberta had approved 50 brands across 29 operators, while other reports counted at least 51 live sites across 30 companies.

The figures highlight the speed of Alberta's market expansion. However, the province's next challenge involves ensuring operators meet its regulatory requirements and maintain appropriate consumer safeguards.

Regulators Prepare to Enforce Alberta iGaming Market Rules

The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) and Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) are working together to oversee the market. Their responsibilities include monitoring compliance and supporting a regulated environment for online gambling.

AiGC CEO Dan Keene expressed confidence in the province's enforcement approach, emphasizing the partnership between the two organizations.

"I would suspect that AGLC is very diligent in their enforcement of our marketplace… They will be bringing a force to bear from a regulatory standpoint. And from an AiGC perspective, we're not standing on the sidelines here. We have our own tools and measures to analyze the marketplace and provide information to our regulator on what we're seeing and in terms of any compliance infractions."

Keene added that both organizations have a role in ensuring operators follow provincial requirements.

"So it's very much a partnership between AIGC and AGLC. I remain extremely confident in terms of the type of compliance measures AGLC will be implementing. At the same time, the AIGC also has levers that we can pull."

The comments underscore the province's intention to combine regulatory oversight with market monitoring. While AGLC leads enforcement, AiGC can analyze market activity and provide information that helps identify potential compliance issues.

These efforts also support Alberta's broader consumer protection goals. Licensed operators must follow applicable requirements covering player verification, responsible gambling and other regulatory safeguards.

More Gambling Platforms Could Join Alberta's Market

Alberta's expanding market has attracted established casino and sportsbook brands, including DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, bet365, Caesars, Stake and Betway. Their participation gives residents more options within the provincial regulatory framework.

Meanwhile, further growth could be on the horizon. Keene reportedly expects another 10-15 sites to launch before the end of 2026, potentially raising the total to approximately 65.

However, planned launches will depend on operators completing the necessary regulatory steps. Registration or preparations to enter the market do not automatically mean a platform can begin accepting wagers.

As competition increases, operators will need to distinguish their products while meeting Alberta's compliance standards. Regulators must also ensure that market growth does not come at the expense of player protection.

Regulation Could Reshape Alberta's Online Poker Market

The transition has also affected online poker. PokerStars withdrew its services from Alberta, while 888 was preparing to introduce a regulated poker platform, according to recent reports.

These developments show how provincial requirements can influence individual gambling products as well as the wider market. Players may experience changes in platform availability as operators adjust to Alberta's framework.

Ultimately, Alberta gambling will enter its next stage with two priorities: maintaining regulatory compliance and building a sustainable market. The rapid growth in approved platforms has established a competitive foundation, but enforcement will remain central to the province's approach.

The coming months will show whether coordinated oversight can support further market expansion while protecting residents and reinforcing confidence in regulated online gambling.
