The first Kentucky Derby Future Wager of 2026 is here. Don't miss your chance to lock in a big price on the next Triple Crown winner!
Understanding the Kentucky Derby Future Wager
The Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) is one of the most popular long-range betting opportunities in American racing. It allows bettors to lock in odds on potential Kentucky Derby starters months before the field is set, and long before prep races truly shape the landscape. Pool 3 of the 2026 Future Wager runs Noon ET Friday (1/16) through 6 pm ET Sunday (1/18), offering $2 Win and Exacta wagering on 39 individual horses plus the "All Other 3-Year-Olds" option.
Because these wagers are non-refundable and fixed-odds, bettors must balance risk, pedigree, trainer reputation, and the inherent uncertainty of the early Derby trail. Be sure to check out the odds provided at the best horse racing betting sites and always remember to look for special promos around big events. For example, BetOnline is currently offering a 55% first deposit match when you use code BNBOL55 at signup!
Why "All Other 3-Year-Olds" Is the Safest Bet—But Not the Most Fun
The 4-1 morning-line favorite in Pool 3 is once again #40 All Other 3-Year-Olds, and statistically this choice makes the most sense. The vast majority of Derby starters each year are not included in the early pools, and many celebrated juveniles never make it to the first Saturday in May.
However, here at Betting News we're here for the vibes and taking the "the field" lacks originality and the sporting flair that we live for. Plus who wants to spend 5 months rooting for 39 horses to fail? For fans who want to back a real contender early, there are more engaging, pedigree-backed, trainer-supported strategies.
Why Pedigree Matters: Sires Proven at 10 Furlongs
In early Derby Futures, pedigree is one of the few reliable signals available before contenders have fully developed. Certain stallions consistently produce horses with stamina, durability, and the ability to thrive at classic distances.
Below are the sires that have demonstrated the ability to produce horses capable of running 10 furlongs early in their 3-year-old season.
Gun Runner
Gun Runner has quickly become one of North America's most influential classic-distance sires. His runners display tactical speed, strong cruising ability, and remarkable consistency. Gun Runner gets horses who mature early which is perfect for Derby-trail prep timing.
Pool 3 Runners: #4 Brant (30-1), #18 Further Ado (10-1), #25 Mob (80-1), #30 Paladin (10-1), #36 Thunder Buck (80-1), #37 Thunderously (60-1)
Into Mischief
The most dominant Triple Crown sire of the past decade, Into Mischief produces early speed horses who can stretch out. His best colts—Authentic and Mandaloun—proved the line is fully capable of winning at 10 furlongs, especially under elite trainers.
Pool 3 Runners:#6 Cannoneer (15-1), #10 Commandment (20-1), #31 Renegade (60-1), #35 Ted Noffey* (6-1)
*Indicates pool favorite other than "All Other" wager.
Quality Road
Quality Road sires powerful, long-striding colts who excel at route distances. His progeny often show steady improvement from two to three, making them attractive for futures bettors who want horses likely to peak in April and May.
Pool 3 Runners: #29 Ottinho (90-1)
Omaha Beach
A rapidly rising sire whose runners have been showing speed, heart, and strong classic-distance potential. Omaha Beach offspring tend to have excellent turn-of-foot and strong late acceleration—valuable traits for Derby-style races.
Pool 3 Runners: #11 Crossingthechannel (90-1), #14 Desert Gate (50-1)
Honorable Mention
Tapit and Justify are also sires who have shown live runners in these Triple Crown style races. However, neither currently has any progeny in the pool. Keep your eyes peeled for late emerging talents from these bloodlines in pools 4,5, and 6.
Top Future Wager Plays from Pool 3 Based on Sire + Trainer Strength
Combining sire history with trainers who have proven the ability to get horses ready for these races, here's a look at the top contenders for Derby pool #3.
Tier 1: Strongest Win Candidates

Barnes was the favorite in Derby Pool #3 (Jan 2025). He ultimately did not earn enough points to make the gate.
#35 Ted Noffey (6-1)
-
Sire: Into Mischief
-
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
Pletcher is one of the sport's most reliable Derby prep conditioners, and Ted Noffey enters Pool 3 as the proven juvenile standout. Undefeated and already a Grade I stakes winner, he's the most legitimate early favorite. The cautionary tale here is that you're betting on the horse with proven 2 year old form. The likelihood of others catching up or him taking a bad step on the road to the Derby means you may actually get him at a similar or better price on Derby day. Best horse today…yes, but there's a lot of risk in the price.
#18 Further Ado (10-1)
-
Sire: Gun Runner
-
Trainer: Brad Cox
Cox + Gun Runner is one of the most potent stamina combinations in modern racing. Further Ado's pedigree and placement with a Derby-proven barn make him a true value play. The concern with this one is that Cox, despite being one of the highest percentage trainers in the country has only won the Kentucky Derby once. Keep in mind his horse crossed the line second in that race and was given the win months later via disqualification of Medina Spirit.
#30 Paladin (10-1)
-
Sire: Gun Runner
-
Trainer: Chad Brown
Brown is conservative with Derby prospects, but when he keeps a colt on the trail, they usually belong. Paladin offers both pedigree stamina and high-level developmental confidence. Brown has yet to secure the Derby Crown. Maybe you save this runner for the Preakness future where Chad has hit with multiple runners.
Tier 2: Live Longshots with Upside

Kentucky Derby Winner Sovereignty was a mid-priced horse in 2025 closing Pool 3 at 21-1
#6 Cannoneer (15-1)
-
Sire: Into Mischief
-
Trainer: Brad Cox
A good combination of precocity and conditioning. A logical mid-price option. The same thing is true of this runner and the #10 Commandment. Despite my skepticism of Cox at 10-1 with Further Ado, these mid price runners provide an extra 5-10 points in the odds to make the sweat of an unproven commodity worth it.
#10 Commandment (20-1)
-
Sire: Into Mischief
-
Trainer: Brad Cox
Classic Cox pedigree: efficient mover, tactical speed—just needs steady improvement.
#4 Brant (30-1)
-
Sire: Gun Runner
-
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Baffert's was flying high after ending the drought for a Triple Crown winner with American Pharoah. He ran it back just a few years later with Justify. Even in 2021 when his prospects didn't look as strong, he pulled off the upset with Medina Spirit before the DQ. Since his ban from Churchill Downs following the 2021 Derby, Baffert hasn't had the same success. The easy comeback is that he wasn't getting great stock on account of the ban and with restrictions lifted he will return to his former glory.
Tier 3: Deep Longshots Worth a Flyer
#14 Desert Gate (50-1)
-
Sire: Omaha Beach
-
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Stamina plus speed. Baffert is a West Coast trainer where the sire did most of his damage. The road to profitability is paved with "The other Baffert"s.
#8 Chip Honcho (50-1)
-
Sire: Connect
-
Trainer: Steve Asmussen
This one is running in the Lecomte this weekend. Although not by one of the preferred sires, you get the winningest trainer in North American racing. He is also the losingest trainer in Kentucky Derby history at 0-26 with 3 seconds and 2 thirds.
#31 Renegade (60-1)
-
Sire: Into Mischief
-
Trainer: Todd Pletcher
The most dominant classic sire in recent vintage with a 2 time Derby winning trainer at 54 points higher than the current favorite? The value players may be licking their chops on this one. Admittedly, I want this one just we can get some sweet victory montages with the Styx song by the same title in the background.
#11 Crossingthechannel (90-1)
-
Sire: Omaha Beach
-
Trainer: Mike Trombetta
Proven regional trainer who doesn't get a ton of chances with such regal bloodlines. Maybe he just needs his shot.
#29 Ottinho (90-1)
-
Sire: Quality Road
-
Trainer: Chad Brown
Another runner pairing solid classic bloodlines with excellent training acumen. If you think you're getting 90-1 on Chad Brown any other time during the year, you're absolutely mad.
Final Thoughts
If you want a statistically safe play in Pool 3, bet All Other 3-Year-Olds. However, if you want a sporting wager, find a value bet rooted in proven classic-distance sires and Derby-savvy conditioners.

-
#31 Renegade (Into Mischief- Todd Pletcher)
-
#30 Paladin (Gun Runner- Chad Brown) narrowly ahead of #18 Further Ado (Gun Runner- Brad Cox).
