When the Minnesota Lynx and New York Liberty last met on July 30, WNBA MVP Napheesa Collier stole the show. In Minnesota&#8217;s 100-93 win, Collier tallied 30 points and nine rebounds to add another line to her MVP resume. If the second Lynx vs. Liberty matchup is to have the same outcome, today’s battle in Brooklyn (12:30 p.m. ET, ABC) will have to come with a different star rising to the occasion.
Since Collier suffered a sprained ankle against the Las Vegas Aces eight days ago, Minnesota has extended its current win streak to four. But can they take it to five without their shiniest star? Today’s game vs. the Liberty will be Minnesota&#8217;s sixth game without Collier this season. Results have been good to date, as they are 4-1 SU without her. That includes a couple of wins this week at Seattle (91-87) and at home against Washington (80-76).
When your best player is as impactful as Collier, being without leaves a huge void to fill. That the Lynx have shown that they can to some degree is a sign of their strength as a unit.
The same can be said of the Liberty, who remain without Breanna Stewart (knee). With three straight wins, they have stabilized since a four-game skid that accompanied her absence. Of course, the Lynx are a significant step up from Connecticut and Dallas, who bring up the rear in the WNBA standings.
That said, the home team feels like the better play with Collier out. The Lynx have been outstanding against the WNBA’s better teams, but the Liberty have excelled in this specific spot.
In the last Lynx vs. Liberty matchup, Collier’s huge night bested a big game by Sabrina Ionescu. In the loss, Ionescu had 31 points (11 of 20 FG, 3 of 8 3PT, 6 of 8 FT). Look for Ionescu to star again after subpar shooting performances against Dallas on Tuesday (2 for 9) and Friday (5 for 16).
Ionescu doesn’t often shoot that poorly for extended stretches, so taking the over on her points prop and her made threes prop can be done confidently, especially when you consider that she has not gone more than four games without 3+ made threes since August 2022.
