Vegas Golden Knights

The Vegas Golden Knights are a professional ice hockey team based in the Las Vegas metropolitan area. Competing in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference, the "VGK" entered the National Hockey League (NHL) in 2017 as one of the most successful expansion stories in the history of professional sports.

History of the Team

The Vegas Golden Knights were officially founded in June 2016, becoming the first major professional sports franchise to represent Las Vegas. The roster was assembled through a 2017 Expansion Draft, where General Manager George McPhee selected players left unprotected by the other 30 NHL teams.

These players famously dubbed themselves the "Golden Misfits." They channeled their shared experience of being "cast off" to fuel an improbable run to the Stanley Cup Final in their inaugural year.

After years of consistently deep playoff runs, the franchise reached the mountaintop in 2023, capturing their first Stanley Cup by defeating the Florida Panthers in five games. This victory fulfilled owner Bill Foley's bold "Cup in Six" (years) prediction, making Vegas the fastest expansion team in the modern era to win a championship.

• Vegas Strong: Following the tragic shooting in Las Vegas just days before their 2017 home opener, the team became a symbol of healing for the city. They retired jersey No. 58 to honor the victims.
• The Record Breakers: Vegas holds the record for the most wins (51) and points (109) by an expansion team in its inaugural season.
• 2023 Stanley Cup Champions: The team secured the title with a dominant 9-3 victory in Game 5, led by a hat trick from Mark Stone.
• The Mascot: Unlike the knight-themed branding, the mascot is a Gila monster named Chance. Management chose the Gila monster because the team felt a traditional knight would not be child-friendly enough for community events.

Notable Players

Marc-André Fleury

Fleury was the first face of the franchise. Selected from the Pittsburgh Penguins, the future Hall of Fame goaltender provided instant credibility and elite play. 

He won the Vezina Trophy (Best Goaltender) as a Golden Knight in 2021 and remains a beloved figure for his role in the team's "Misfit" beginnings.

Jonathan Marchessault

Arguably the greatest "Misfit," Marchessault is the franchise's all-time leader in goals and points. Marchessault defined his Vegas career with clutch performances, winning the 2023 Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP during the team's championship run.

Mark Stone

Stone was the first captain in franchise history. Many consider him as one of the best two-way forwards in the game.  Additionally, his emotional leadership and defensive brilliance have been the backbone of the locker room since his arrival via trade in 2019.

He famously scored a hat trick in the Stanley Cup-clinching game.

William Karlsson

"Wild Bill" shocked the league in the inaugural season by scoring 43 goals. He has evolved into the team's most reliable defensive center on the ice.

Additionally, Karlsson remains one of the few original "Misfits" still contributing to the core of the roster.

Notable Coaches

Gerard Gallant (2017-2020)

Gallant was the first coach in franchise history and the architect of the "Golden Misfit" culture. He led the expansion team to the Stanley Cup Final in their first year.

This culminated with the Jack Adams Award and the NHL's Coach of the Year in 2018.

Peter DeBoer (2020-2022)

DeBoer took over mid-season in 2020 and maintained the team's status as a contender. He led Vegas to back-to-back appearances in the league semifinals (2020 and 2021). 

Notably, DeBoer oversaw the transition as the team moved away from its expansion roots into a more veteran-heavy powerhouse.

Bruce Cassidy (2022-Present)

Cassidy arrived in 2022 and immediately implemented a structured defensive system. This propelled the team to their first Stanley Cup championship in 2023. 

Moreover, many consider him to be the most successful coach in the team's short history. His tactical brilliance and ability to manage a star-studded roster have led to much success.
