Home to two NFL teams, two MLB teams, an NBA team, an NHL team, and two MLS teams, as well as a number of well-known NCAA Division I universities, there is always something on the sporting calendar to follow in Ohio.

And since January 1, 2023, regulated sports betting has been available for residents of the Buckeye State to place bets on the likes of the Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Cavaliers, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Ohio State Buckeyes.

Here, we take a look at sports betting in Ohio, as well as the availability of other types of gambling in the state.

Top Ohio Betting Sites for 2023

Sports Betting in Ohio

Regulated sports betting has been active in Ohio only since the beginning of 2023, but legalization took place over a year prior, as HB 29 was passed in December 2021.

While other states have placed various limitations surrounding regulated sports betting, Ohio doesn’t have any such limitations, with both in-person and online sports betting both allowed.

Still, there may be Ohio residents who wish to continue betting with the sports betting sites that they used prior to January 2023, or they wish to have access to certain odds that they may not be able to find at other books. Also, some bettors just like to have as many outs as possible.

For anyone who is in one of those groups, offshore sports betting sites like Bovada and, just to name a couple, have a great deal to offer even in states where regulated sports betting is active.

Is Horse Race Betting Legal in Ohio?

Along with being a great state for sports bettors and sports in general, Ohio is also a great place for horse racing and betting on horse racing.

Betting on horse racing has been legal in Ohio since 1933, and in addition to being able to bet on live races at tracks around the state, there are also several off-track betting locations.

Also, while some states offer in-person but online betting on horse racing, betting on horse racing online is also legal in the state.

Is casino gambling legal in Ohio?

Casino gambling, as well as other forms of gambling, were not legal in Ohio until 2009, when voters in the state passed a ballot initiative that would bring one casino each to Ohio’s four largest cities: Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, and Toledo.

Along with those casinos, there are several tribal casinos and other facilities where some form of in-person casino gambling can take place.

But as of June 2023, there has been no legislation to pave the way for online casino gambling to be state regulated and active in the Buckeye State. So, until that changes at some point in the future, Ohioans can play blackjack, poker, and any of their other favorite casino games online at offshore betting sites.
