The Carolina Panthers are the odds-on favorite to finish last in the NFC South, so it is safe to say that expectations are low for Matt Rhule’s second season. But if the Panthers can at least avoid following a similar pattern to the previous two seasons, that might be considered progress.

In the 2019 season, Ron Rivera’s final season as coach, the Panthers started 5-3 but lost their final eight games. Last season, the Panthers started a respectable 3-2 but lost five in a row and nine of 11 to finish at 5-11 for the second straight season.

The season did positively showcase quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s ability to be a full-time starter again, which he had not been since his career-threatening knee injury prior to the 2016 season. After having the best individual season of his career, Bridgewater is now the starting quarterback in Denver after beating out Drew Lock to be QB1 for the Broncos. Rhule will be hoping for the same from Sam Darnold, who was acquired a trade with the New York Jets in April. As luck would have it, Darnold and the Panthers face the Jets to open the regular season.

With two returning 1,000-yard receivers in D.J. Moore and Robby Anderson, along with a healthy Christian McCaffrey, Darnold has a solid foundation around him. McCaffrey was limited to only three games last season, but he totaled 2,392 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2019. If he is healthy and Darnold makes the most of his new opportunity, the Panthers could have a potent offense.

Will that be enough to lead the Panthers up the standings? It will not be easy when they have four games against the New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, along with road games against several teams that hope to be in the mix for division titles and playoff berths. But with other rebuilding teams on their schedule, the Panthers should have a good chance to win more than five games. From there, the next step will be to reach the playoffs, which they have done only once in the last five seasons since their appearance in Super Bowl L.
