Last season may not have been a banner year for pitching in Major League Baseball, but Gerrit Cole and Blake Snell did prove themselves to be worthy Cy Young Award winners.
For Cole, it was his first AL Cy Young win after finishing runner-up to then-Houston Astros teammate Justin Verlander in 2019 and Robbie Ray in 2022.
Snell, who led MLB in ERA, added an NL Cy Young win to the AL Cy Young he won in 2018 while with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Cole (15-4, 2.63 ERA, 222 Ks) and Snell (14-9, 2.25 ERA, 234 Ks) were two of five qualified pitchers to finish with an ERA under 3.00 last season. That was the lowest number since 2007, when only NL Cy Young winner Jake Peavy finished with a sub-3.00 ERA.
Cole was a unanimous winner in the AL, claiming all 30 first-place votes to finish well ahead of runner-up Sonny Gray, another of the sub-3.00 ERA quintet.
Snell didn’t quite manage that in the NL, as Logan Webb and Zac Gallen both received one first-place vote apiece. But 28 first-place votes are more than he received in 2018, when his 17 first-place votes and 169 points edged out Verlander (13 first-place votes and 154 points).
Will we see either repeat this season? Cole has begun the new season on the shelf, which could affect his challenge, while Snell could potentially repeat after opting to remain in the NL and sign with the San Francisco Giants.
Currently, Cy Young Award odds are not available at sportsbooks like BetOnline, BetUS, and Bovada. But here is how odds currently shake out at other sportsbooks.

Who Could Be the Top 2024 Cy Young Award Candidates?
Will a change of scenery see Burnes match Snell with Cy Young wins in both leagues?
After winning the NL Cy Young in 2021, Burnes went 12-8 with a 2.94 ERA in 2022 and 10-8 with a 3.39 ERA in 2023, finishing seventh and eighth respectively in Cy Young voting.
But prior to what would have been his final season in Milwaukee, Burnes was dealt to the Orioles in February. A lot of baseball is ahead, but early returns indicate that the move to Baltimore will pay off for both Burnes and the Birds.
Who could challenge him in the AL? With Cole sidelined for the time being, it’s anyone’s guess. Seattle’s stellar rotation is getting a lot of attention—will any of their arms emerge as the man to beat?
In the NL, there’s a good chance it could come down to Zack or Zac. Spencer Strider, who led the majors in strikeouts last season, would have been a leading candidate, but there’s a real possibility he could be done for 2024 due to an arm injury.
A big variable in the NL Cy Young race is whether Glasnow can make it through a full season with no injury concerns.
The 120 innings that Glasnow pitched last season with the Rays were a career high and only the second time he had reached 100 innings in a season.
If he can stay healthy, don’t be surprised if he is at the top of the heap at the end of the season.
