Intertops is one of the most recognizable names in the online sportsbook industry. Once an absolute giant, the company has struggled to remain relevant in a post-UIGEA world. However, the site continues to compete in the space, and with the addition of some ancillary products, the site looks to be an option not just for sports gamblers. Our review of Intertops will look at the site as a whole with an emphasis on the sports betting piece. In the end, we will be able to tell you if it is a site worth your time and money.
Intertops was one of the first sites launched in the new era of online gambling, first taking bets all the way back in 1996. Back in those days, many sites were launching focused on the U.S. sports betting market, and while Intertops claims to be the first, there are several other sites making the same claim.
The site is based in Antigua and has a license from the Kahnawake Gaming Commission. This regulator, based just outside of Montreal, was at one time highly sought after as they had built a hosting facility that was very friendly to North American gamblers. The years have not been great to the Commission, and we don’t really consider this license to provide much security to players, unlike those from Malta and the UK.
The good news for most of our readers, especially those in the United States, is that the only country that seems to be excluded from opening an account at Intertops is the United Kingdom. For everyone else, you just have to choose your country from a drop-down menu on the registration page, then you are only a few pieces of information away from having an account.
We like any site that allows us to browse the offering without having to create an account, so off we went to the sportsbook section of Intertops. Here, we found a great layout, with very easy to read font – this is a must when trying to look through all the odds. The bet slip was found on the right side of the screen as it is at most sportsbooks and a list of sports and other menu items on the left side. We didn’t like that the prime real estate in the middle of the page was reserved for some poll questions – we would like to have seen more highlights games or in-game betting pushed higher on the screen.
When it was time to make some bets, it was very simple to use the interface. Finding a game was as simple as using the menu on the left, and we found a couple of basketball games we wanted to get some action on. We selected a couple of games, and from the betting slip, we were able to quickly make straight bets and a parlay. It took less than a minute to get these bets in, which is very fast and ensures you don’t miss any good lines.
Overall, we think the interface is excellent, and having a tab for the US sports coupon shows you how dedicated the site is to attracting North American players.
Intertops has a full casino offering for its players, which is split into two different brands. The casinos are exactly the same, both of them are licensed from Real Time Gaming. The only difference is which regions can access each site, and we assume that is for controlling bet size and the progressive jackpots. While Real Time Gaming doesn’t offer nearly the number of games that a company like Microgaming might, the fact is that RTG is one of the few suppliers that allows licensees to accept U.S. players. You can find great slots like the Real Series here, as well as some other excellent games.
There is also poker available at Intertops, but we don’t want you to get too excited about it. A skin of the Revolution Poker Network, this site is very small. Yes, you can find a few cash games available as well as some very small tournaments, but if you are interested in more poker action (and live outside the U.S.), then we would suggest reading some of our other reviews.
One other claim that Intertops makes is that it launched the very first mobile betting platform all the way back in 2000. Now, we want you to cast your mind back tot hat time, when flip phones were all the rage and screens were barely the size of your palm. Sports betting didn’t take much real estate, so it actually worked ok on those old phones.
The good news is just as the mobile industry improved technology, so did the Intertops mobile offering. Today, you can access all the sports betting and casino games via the browser on your phone or tablet, assuming it meets the minimum technical specifications. There is no app available to download, which is not surprising given the software supplier for casino and the fact that most of the traffic at Intertops is still coming from the U.S.
There are many promotions available to players across all the product lines available at Intertops, but we are going to focus on two specifically for sportsbook players that we think are of interest to our readers.
We like that Intertops has given players multiple options for the initial deposit bonus. Players have a wide range of comfort when it comes to making deposits at an online gambling site, so this offer is something that has somewhat of a sliding scale. Have a look at the three options.
This is an excellent way to get players of all stakes levels to make their first deposits.
Free $20 Bet
For those who aren’t interested in earning bonus dollars, Intertops offers a very quick and easy betting option. Once you make your deposit and place your first bet of $20 or more, you will be credited with a free $20 bet. These are very easy to understand, and many players prefer this simplicity. However, choose wisely, as you cannot use both New Player Bonuses.
For a site that accepts U.S. players, we are pleasantly surprised that Intertops has payment solutions that aren’t just credit cards and Bitcoin. Of course, many of these solutions will only be for players outside America, but this is great news for players who want to use an e-wallet solution.
There are limited payout options, and those of you who want a check should be prepared to wait up to 28 days to receive it in the mail.
You can reach Intertops via many methods if you need to ask them a question or have a concern about your betting account. There are individual email addresses for different areas of the support department, which we think is an excellent idea that all sites should offer. If you want to call them, Intertops has several numbers to choose from including one for German speaking players. Finally, you can chat with the site in real-time using Skype or the Live Chat function which is available directly from within the pages of the website.
A site that has been around for more than 20 years can often become stale, and this is something that players (and reviewers) notice. We are happy to report that Intertops has tried to keep their offering up to modern standards, and with the multiple deposits bonuses and games available, there is something for everyone. While the site doesn’t have as many bells and whistles as many other global-facing sites, for our U.S. readers it is a top-rated option.
